“Miss Flaherty, I’m calling from HMP Hotten regarding an inmate, Robert Sugden. I’ve got your number down as his emergency contact,” the man says, except that can’t be right. Robert’s not in Hotten, he’s off on the Isle of Wight, and anyway, why would Liv be down and not Vic or Diane or Aaron—
The man’s still talking, and Liv realises she’s frozen in the middle of the hall, missed whatever he’s been saying, tunes in just in time to hear, “…hospitalised. We can inform you of how the procedure goes.”
“Sorry,” she says, her voice catching, “sorry, can you…can you repeat that? What’s wrong with Robert? What hospital?”
The man sighs, like he doesn’t get paid enough to deal with this. Liv refrains from calling him a twat and listens.
[Or: It's 2022 and Liv's at Uni and happier than she thought she'd get to be. Apparently she's also Robert's emergency contact. It changes things.]

Robert tilts his head slightly. “Fair point. So… aren’t you going to invite me in?”
Aaron shrugs. “I’m going home now.”
Robert moves closer so the two of them are practically toe-to-toe. A tingle spreads from Aaron’s neck to his hip.
“Invite me there instead, then,” Robert says smoothly.Aaron instinctively steps backwards, his back hitting the portacabin door. He can’t deal with this right now; it’s not how they work. They don’t do flirting in broad daylight. They barely interact when there isn’t some sort of event (and booze) dragging them together.

The first letter Liv writes is at the end of lockdown.
She doesn’t send it. Barely finishes it. A lot of it is scribbled out and angry. What remains just sounds empty when she reads it back. She’s not even sure he would get it. She’s not sure how much ‘blocked all contact’ means. Robert has become a forbidden subject. His name alone would set Aaron off. Off and down the cliff they all keep trying to pull him away from.
So, they just don’t say it. Even Vic has stopped talking about him. The few times Liv has seen her on the other side of the street or through various layers of masks and plastic sheets. Busy with little Harry – someone she needs to put first now.
Liv scribbles her words, pen denting the pages as she goes over it again and again. Rips the page out of the notebook crumpling it in her hands and throws it in the trash.

“What are you doing up? I thought you were still sleeping,” countered Aaron without looking at him. His mind was still occupied by that stubborn dough in front of him. He might have to start this whole thing again. Or can he still save it? He stopped thinking about it when he realized that Robert didn’t answer his question. He looked up and saw him leaning against the doorframe of the bedroom, with a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
“I was...” lied Robert smoothly ”...until I heard World War III breaking out in our kitchen,” he laughed. Watching Aaron struggle with a rolling pin was a far better distraction than staring at the ceiling. For the first time in days, he wasn’t thinking about the farm, about Vic, about any of that. Right now, he was focusing on his own heartbeat because even if the kitchen was a war zone, Aaron wanted to make an effort, and it made his heart beat faster.

Aaron wants to do something nice for Robert so... he decides to cook. Even if he didn't quite manage to master the art of making homemade pasta, the last time he tried to do it. -

Summary
They are told only untainted love can elevate them to the Purelands, out of this hell; but love can never end well, Robert's sure of that. If watching it destroy his family wasn't enough proof, he himself has been the downfall of countless others. As a lure, he can take the form of a person's deepest desires, make them fall in love, use it to destroy them. He does what he has to, to survive in this city, with the powers he's been given; he's never understood the weakness of those who fall, who give in to that person they can't stay away from, jeopardise themselves.
Out in the backlands, trying to survive the repressive regime, Aaron knows he just needs to keep his head down, keep working and keep himself safe so he can be there to protect his sister. He knows he must ignore the hunger for love that keeps growing inside him or he'll risk everything; and ignore it is exactly what he intends to keep doing.
When Robert is sent back to his childhood village with the intention of condemning another unsuspecting soul, will either of them be able to do what they know they must to survive?

AU: John Sugden didn't die. After the multi-crash in Yorkshire John Sugden went into the woods. A police detective was after him and so was Robert. But when he was about to deal with Robert for good the police detective caught him off guard and knocked him out cold with a clump of wood.
Now he was behind bars. For him Prison wasn't an option, but now he was here.

Robert had woken up the day after him and Aaron slept together in a happier mood. Aaron wanted him around. He didn't think he was a waste of space. He even messaged him to meet up the morning after. It was a good start to end his streak of bad days.

Aaron works as a barista at Brew & Bite, a cosy, slightly scruffy coffee shop in the next town over from Emmerdale.
Robert moved away as a teenager, made a life elsewhere, and returned in his late twenties. Now he’s 40, sharply dressed, confident, a bit posh (or at least acting like it), and definitely hiding the fact he’s bisexual.
None of this stops him from immediately developing a crush on the grumpy barista who annoys him, challenges him, and calls him out on his stupid coffee orders.
And definitely none of it stops him from flirting.
