Summary
Megan turns on her heels to stand in front of Jake, blocking his way. "Ever since you've started being pissed at your sort-of-not-really-stepdad, your sort-of-not-really-stepdad has been really pouty, and when your sort-of-not-really-stepdad gets all pouty, my actual-real-dad gets upset too, and when my actual-real-dad gets upset, he's not likely to let me go to the lake house. So I need you to fix your sort-of-not-really-stepdad."
What the fuck.
"What the fuck, Meg."
"Look, I don't like this any more than you do. You think I want to spend my time worrying about some loser's relationship with his whatever Robby is to you?"
"Thanks, Meg."

Summary
“I distinctly recall extending an invite that you turned down.”
“I’m your attending.” Robby says in lieu of anything else.
The invite for drinks was for more than just drinks, then. Robby had suspected that, but he didn’t have any evidence to confirm it. Abbot looks about as straight as they come, military background and all, gruff and corn-fed. His lingering eyes defied that in ways Robby could never put a finger on, in ways he wouldn’t let himself.
Abbot shrugs, watching Robby closely, “I’m a consenting adult.”
Robby pulls in a deep breath, reading between the lines of those words isn’t hard, “I don’t have drinks with my residents.”

Summary
A juvenile presents to the Pitt with an infected laceration. When Robby goes to examine, he finds that it's not only infected, the leg is dead from the knee-down. He breaks the news to his religious mother, who takes out a gun and gives Dr. Robinavitch an ultimatum: either he fixes the leg without amputation, or he dies.
At home, Jack struggles with guilt after an argument with Robby the prior night. He doesn't have time to make a proper apology with their shifts, but at the very least, he can bring Robby lunch as a peace offering.

Summary
Denial. Robby could recite the stages of grief like a prayer. But this? No, it simply wasn’t true. He’d seen Jack, what, an hour and a half before 8:24? Jack, who’d joked about…something. What was it? Hawkeye, that was it. Jack had called Robby ‘Hawkeye.’ And then he’d left, saying he’d see him tonight. Jack had said specifically that, he’d said he’d see Robby tonight. That wasn’t…that just wouldn’t make sense.
“No, he, uh…he’s back on duty in a couple hours, he’ll be coming in for his shift.”
It was such an inane thing to say. Exactly the sort of thing he’d find heartrendingly innocent in the family of a patient, when delivering the bad news. Not rational. Not real. But this had to be real, Jack had to be coming in for his shift. Handover was in two hours.
Officer Anders stepped in. “We’d like you to come down to the station with us to identify the body.”
-----
Robby finds out that he's Jack's emergency contact in the worst possible way: when he's called in to identify the body.
Can be a sequel to 'Day or Night,' but also works as a standalone. Title from 'I Was an Island' by John-Allison Weiss.
