But this cannot be farther from the truth.
For the truth lies far above the battlefields of the eastern front, far under the ground of the iron wall, and deep below the sea where the British naval vessels anchor and prepare.
The truth, though few know it, is that powers far greater than man are responsible for this war. It is the result of the Greek deities of old, whose actions both before and during the conflict have disastrous consequences. Their sons and daughters, whether aware of their parenthood or not, play important roles in the battles taking place.
Their choices may save the world, or may doom it, and very few will know this truth.

But his fingers were already touching it. Making contact with the wet surface of the table. And the juice was warm. Body-warm from sitting out. And sticky. It clung to his fingers as he pulled them back, strands of red connecting his hand to the table like sinew, like tissue, like the strings that held bodies together before they came apart.
The juice dripped from his fingers.
Ran down his palm.
Pooled in the lines of his hand like a river finding channels, following the creases, the grooves, mapping out his life line and his heart line in red.
Drip.
Aka: Spilled drinks had stopped being accidents after Percy learned what blood looked like spreading across the ground.

Rumi looks down. “Your soul,” she whispers mournfully, enraptured by the blue light trickling out of his chest. “It’s beautiful.”
Jinu smiles.
Gently, he presses his forehead against hers. Rumi jolts, eyes widening, but to his relief, she doesn’t pull away.
“My soul,” he echoes softly. “It’s yours, now.”
Rumi opens her mouth, but no words escape her as she gapes at him. A tear cascades down her cheek.
“It’s mine to give, and yours to take, if you’ll have me.” His vision is blurring, and so he lets his eyes fall shut, allowing the darkness to encompass him. He forces himself to believe that the lull of sleep is accepted of his own volition.
His cheeks tingle. Rumi is holding onto his face. “No, no, no—” she grits out. Her voice is growing distant. “Stop. You can’t do this to me.” The words rush out of her in a frenzy, full of haste and distress. “Jinu.”
“Rumi,” he responds in a broken murmur. “Thank you.”
She was right. Gwi-Ma could be defeated.
He should have listened to her.
(Or: A fix-it/time-travel au where Jinu goes back to the very beginning of the story and sets things right.)

He decided to keep his hands clean of both; the only thing he was really doing this for was to get the Mech running as soon as possible so he could find Shroud and beat him into less than a bloodied pulp and then continue digging himself into a pit of sacrifice and service.
His horned and terrifying subordinate envisioned something different for him.

"Don't they use t-ball at that age?" Reyna asked, her lips curving upward.
Percy sharply inhaled, "Eeeeh, details, details. What matters is that I have a trophy in my room."
"Is it an LVP trophy? Least valuable player?"
Smiling, Percy tilted his head and looked, truly looked at her. This was a different version of Reyna, one…one that she deserved, for god knows she had been through more shit than most.
"What?" She asked, tugging at her skirt.
Percy shook his head, realizing he'd been staring a bit too much. "Retirement looks good on you."
