In the wake of Junior Year, Riz’s bad health choices, caffeine addiction, and PTSD start catching up with him and Riz starts experiencing sleep paralysis. He is super normal about it. (He’s not normal about it.) Unfortunately, sleep paralysis demons are hard to distinguish from real demons and when a pro bono cold case goes hot, Riz finds himself in strange company.
AKA: Riz’s sleep paralysis demons all just look like Kalina. I’m sure that won’t go anywhere bad.

“What’s great about this vending machine,” Riz said tapping a finger against the glass for emphasis, “is that some of the chips are sour cream and onion flavored. Which you can’t find on the lower floors.”
When Fig said “Cool,” she really did try to mean it. But there was the fact that this looked just like all other vending machines, and her mom’s house had salt and vinegar chips, which were her favorite, and sometimes, if Fig asked, Sandra Lynn would cut up fruit for Fig and her friends. Or, Fig’s old friends, who she didn’t speak to anymore. Who she’d probably drop kick, if given the chance.
But of course it didn’t matter that Fig didn’t want to talk about it, because Riz was Riz, and he noticed everything. “Are you okay?”
(basically if we'd gotten to follow fig home on that first night she stayed with gilear in the luxury strongtower apartments. and then also maybe fig also feels lonely and convinces riz to help her steal a car about it)

Missing locks making for empty space leading to absolutely nothing. Punishing humidity and an air pressure that would suggest they’re closer to the bottom of the ocean than their own apartments. Rotted, fuzzy fingers of wet alien growth stretching out from under the heavy steel doors, teasing at what awaits them inside. Clumps of softly writhing hair. Murky windows, pale shapes behind them and the skull-compressing promise of unidentifiable, undeniable want.
They have arrived at the swimming pool of the Strongtower Luxury Apartments.

“You love ussss,” Adaine teases, leaning down to grin at him. “You can’t deny it.” She goes to take another sip of her drink and Riz retaliates in true roguelike fashion, getting on his tiptoes to press two fingers underneath her drink and tip it further back. Adaine squeezes her eyes shut and chugs, succeeding her constitution saving throw to avoid choking.
(She’ll wonder later if Riz realizes just how much that little action changed the dynamic of their friend group forever.)
