That’s it, then. You sort of never thought this moment would come, but it did. Vaugarde is saved. The King is defeated. Your journey is over.
Right. Mirabelle will stay here, or maybe go off on a pilgrimage all on her own. Isabeau will go back to Jouvente to pursue his dream. Bonnie back to their sister. And Odile to Ka Bue.
And you…well, you’ll return to traveling, of course. Just like before. That’s fine. It’s what you’ve always done. It won’t be any different than it was before.You’re just glad that this story had a happy ending.
A moment of hesitation and a faint memory leads Siffrin to make a different wish at the Favor Tree. The party of saviors find their final quest goes much more smoothly than they might have anticipated.
This is not a good thing.

He looks so small, Mirabelle thinks, lying there. Eye closed, hands over his chest like he’s in a casket. Their expression is almost calm. There’s no fear on their face, no hurt, no sorrow. Just quiet acceptance. She hates that look. It’s worse, she decides. Worse than if they looked pained.
“Why?” Mirabelle whispers. She isn’t sure who she’s asking. Siffrin? Herself? A God who won't answer? "Why did you do this? Why now, why like this? Why didn’t I notice?"
Siffrin dies. The loop does not end.

He loves her, he thinks, in a weird sort of way. Loves her like a bird loves a cage, like a moth loves a candle flame. She is the one reason he’s alive, and so many of the reasons he wishes he weren’t. She hurts him, but never as much as he wants her to, never enough to soothe his pain. She is the only person on this island that he doesn’t hate, and he thinks this is the closest thing to love he can have now.
She has succeeded in molding him, but he doesn’t think she’s happy with the result. He is dried clay and sharp pottery shards all in too many pieces to put back together. It doesn’t stop her from trying.

"It's not cute! It's weird!" You gasp. "I've been carrying you all in my pockets for months just for my own comfort without telling you!!!! Just so I can pretend I'm squeezing you so hard I break your bones!"
"Siffrin." Odile tilted her head in that way she does when she's amused with something you've done. No. Not again. "Most people would call that cuteness aggression."
… Wait, what?
"… What's that?" You ask dumbly.
"It's like when you see a little puppy and you just wanna shake its little face around!" Mirabelle smiles.
"Or make silly noises and shake your friend back and forth when they do something funny!" Isabeau adds.
"More specifically," Odile spoke. "It's a sense of wanting to act violently towards something you find … cute, and it is completely normal."

“Why aren’t you eating?”
Your hands still, a familiar panic looping a lazy noose around your throat. For a moment, you’re thinking about frozen tears and banana peels and your knife — before you remember that escaping conversations you don’t want to have aren’t that simple anymore. Time marches in an unending line now, one foot after the other, and it only goes forward.
“I’m eating.” You say slowly, trying to ride the line between truth and lie. You have eaten something, but the quantity would surely not be considered ‘enough’ by anyone with a modicum of sense.
