As much as his nightmares plague him, he considers closing his eyes and going back to sleep now because they’re the only way he can see her properly, even if it is usually her lying on the ground with a knife stuck in her. He can visualize her when he’s awake but after everything, he can’t quite properly recreate her mannerisms or the exact cadence of her voice. She’s still achingly familiar to him, yet long-bottled grief has slowly eroded his idea of her. The nightmares, the ones where she dies, the ones where she kills him, the ones where he is never able to save her, that’s all he has left of her.

Sometimes it’s enough, the huff of Emily’s breath in her ears, if she squeezes her eyes closed it’s like she’s there. JJ can imagine the scent of her, almost feel her fingers brushing over the soft skin of her wrist, like if she opens her eyes, she’ll be met with the point of Emily’s nose a hair away from hers, about to nudge against her cheek, mouth poised above hers in a silent question. It only ever lasts for a few beats, and then she’s propelled back into the reality of a cellphone on her pillow in lieu of a warm body, nothing to greet her but the cold stillness of her empty apartment.
Or, JJ calls bullshit on the old idiom that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and deals with her world falling apart in the process.
