Summary
There are moments when he misses himself so deeply it feels like mourning. The boy he was before his body began to dictate the terms of his life so thoroughly, before every plan came with calculations, before touch became something to brace for, before pain crept into places it had no business being. He doesn’t remember when that boy slipped away, only that he did, gradually and without announcement, leaving Remus to fill in the gaps as best he could.
The isolation that comes with it is its own kind of ache. Not just the fact that most of it is invisible, though that doesn’t help, but the way it places a quiet distance between him and everyone else, even when he’s in the middle of a room full of people. When someone tells him he looks fine, he knows they mean it kindly, as reassurance, but it lands wrong anyway. Because fine isn’t how he feels when his skin burns, and his joints throb and his body insists, over and over again, on reminding him of its limits. Some weeks are easier; some weeks he almost believes he’s turned a corner. He goes out, laughs, lets himself forget for a little while. He takes that as proof of progress, as something earned.
