She’s talking to him kindly, smiling at him with care. But she doesn’t approach him, doesn’t reach out to touch, or come closer to pick him up.
And little baby Neito shrinks into himself even further. “Get cold.” he mumbles around the finger still in his mouth.
His mother nods and turns away satisfied. “See? It’s simple. He just needs warmer pajamas, maybe a cozy blanket and some fuzzy stuffies to hold. Everyone just calm down.”
And everyone does.
And little baby Neito learns to keep the empty hole in his chest a secret.

It was a really bad pain day. The worst part was the pain wasn’t even real. Or at least it wasn’t affecting a limb that was real.
One of the limbs he grew for practice yesterday was damaged, cut off. It was right on his back between his shoulder blades. He couldn’t reach it to even try to fix the pain.
Several other phantom limbs were in massive pain as well. All the pain was mixing in the worst ways. There was nothing he could do about it. He still had several classes left for the day. He was going to collapse the second he got back to the dorms.
