Alex’s jaw aches. He’s buried in a mountain of coursework preparing for the final that’s going to make or break any potential future career in law he has, his vision is blurry, and his fucking jaw aches. No amount of stretching it out or massaging at its hinges is helping, and it’s all he can focus on. Not the merits of a case from the 1980’s that set legal precedent, not the infuriating blinking of the cursor on his screen, only the insistent ache in his jaw.
He’s going to scream.
He opens his mouth to do just that, to vent all the frustration of it all out in an agonized groan, when he hears his bedroom door open and the silky sweet voice of his boyfriend saying, “Love, I made you dinner.”

The only audible communication came in the form of desperate gasps; broken moans; a more, please; several yes’s; a broken, scattered, almost breathless good boy. All cracked and disjointed; echoing off the walls of the bathroom stall.
They didn’t go home together. They exited the bathroom, went their separate ways, and Alex resigned himself to the fact that he’d never see him again.

He hasn’t heard from him in almost a year.
Hesitant, he says, “Henry?”
There’s a sniffle. “Alex.”
Alex’s shoulders go taut with tension; he may not have heard from him in a year and had only seen him in tabloids and the occasional interview or ribbon cutting on a shitty stream that Alex had no business being on, but he hasn’t forgotten Henry’s tells. He hasn’t forgotten the edge to his voice on his dark days; the way it clings to the very molecules of air surrounding him, as if it wishes to seep into every ounce of air he dares breathe in.
Alex swallows, sets his highlighter down. “Henry,” he says carefully, “what’s going on?”

The bracelets are Alex’s idea—gifted a day before Henry’s set to go back to London for two weeks and attend several royal engagements. They’re not exactly stylish, nor do they really blend with Henry’s suit, but when he taps the button on the side, and watches Alex’s gaze drop down to his wrist, a surprised little smile on his face as he looks back up to catch Henry’s gaze, he finds he doesn’t care all that much, or at all.

Alex supposes this is his own fault.
He’s had months to say something. Months to stop being a coward and change their circumstances—even if it meant letting go of the idea of what they could be if Henry doesn’t feel the same. Though, the idea of that is probably what’s kept him silent. No longer falling into bed with Henry, his skin beneath Alex’s fingertips, his lips; heart to heart as they lie in the aftermath.
He’d been under the—wrong—presumption that losing Henry entirely is the worst case scenario.
