Mallow thinks that’s really sweet. So sweet, in fact, that she resolves to braid Ash’s hair all the time, now.
She gets a little sad, sometimes, when she thinks about Ash. She knows he probably wouldn’t appreciate it, so she doesn’t do it too much, but every so often it crosses her mind. How he’s been traveling since he was ten. How he doesn’t live with his mom, even though when she was here for the Open House he was really happy. How he says things, sometimes, that make her realize she takes her own life for granted. Man, it’s so nice to be inside while it rains, he said, one time, after arriving to class soaked from the downpour. It looks so much nicer than it feels.

Kukui sips on his own tea. He tries to pretend he isn’t bursting with questions. He wants to ask Ash what’s wrong. What happened. Was it a nightmare? Was it a bad day? Is this what he’s really like, in the quiet where no one else can see? Is this a side of him reserved for Pikachu alone?
He doesn’t say any of those things, though, because Ash has no obligation to stick around. He could be out of here by morning. He could leave and Kukui would never see him again.
What he says instead is this: “How do you like Alola?”
