When he opened his eyes, Xenk was watching him, eyes shining. Was smugness a vice? It should be. Still, Ed ought to thank him. “That was nice,” he said.
“Nice?” Xenk echoed. He drew his hand back, unfortunately.
“Of you,” Ed added hastily. “That was nice of you.” He shook his head. Must have got a concussion that divine healing couldn’t fix.
Xenk’s lips curved up to one side, which should have spoiled the flawless symmetry of his face, but instead made him look like something a master sculptor would carve. “Your bardic studies focused on eloquence, did they not?”
They did, but that didn’t mean Ed went around talking like every sentence was a profundity. People appreciated plain speech; they responded better to somebody who was like them. Still, he recognized a challenge when he heard one, and even if that wasn’t how Xenk meant it, Edgin would take it that way.

"We have in our possession a collar," Parva says, shooting her partner a look. "Whosoever wears it is afflicted with the curse of lycanthropy."
"That sounds like a bummer for whoever wears it," Ed says. Parva transfers her look to him. The second shoe drops. "Wait. No. Me? You want me to wear a cursed collar?"
When Xenk is captured and forced to fight in an illegal werewolf fighting ring, the obvious answer is for Ed to go and rescue him...by willingly cursing himself with lycanthropy. Right? Right.
