Summary
Life was never kind to Xelqua Solidarity, kidnapped at the age of 8 with his younger brother, and cousin, and was declared dead when the so-called heroes raided the human experimentation lab years after they disappeared. Born with the power to create an astral form, able to leave his body at will, Xelqua was used as a toy for the Evolution labs, injected with experimental serums, given a power that wasn’t his. The downfall of the lab came with two angry villains. Grian scoffed, this was his story now.

Summary
Martin had never been the type of person to listen to popular music. It made him feel ridiculously pretentious to say it, but it all felt so superficial. All those songs about love and sex and breakups felt so… detached. Emotionless even as the singer was supposedly pouring their heart out.
He supposed this was part of the reason he liked poetry. Good poetry, where the feelings are so strong you can almost taste them, where you can hear the sounds pinned down by ink on the paper. Martin had been trying his hand at writing his own stuff recently, but it was never much good. It always felt so cliche.
This is probably just a long way of saying that he liked a good story, and definitely a roundabout way of explaining why he enjoyed listening to the Mechanisms so much.
(or to put it another way, Jarchivist Sims is Jonny D'Ville and Martin doesn't realise. Gay shenanigans occur. Now with Angst™)

One: He is, as far as he knows, still Michael–although this is dubious, and perhaps does not count.
Two: The world that he lives in is not what he thought it was. It never has been, and it never will be again.
Three: He cannot, in any circumstances from now until the end of days, trust Gertrude Robinson.An AU in which the Great Twisting crumbled before Michael could be consumed by The Distortion–and he emerges, alive and angry about it. Alternatively, an AU in which Gertrude begins to work on her theories about the rituals much, much earlier, and Gerry finds himself chasing the mystery that is Michael Shelley.
