Izzy raises one trembling hand, turning it so his palm is facing up. Ed's eyes lock onto the thin skin of his wrist, the veins running up it, the hairs that catch the candlelight. He feels lightheaded all of a sudden, blood rushing in his ears.
Izzy's still facing down, and that won't do, Ed needs to see –
He jerks Izzy's face up with a forceful little twist of his wrist. Izzy lets out a small noise, a surprised little "Ah," eyes coming up to meet Ed's.
Ed tips the candle.
Ed makes some realisations about himself and his newly appointed first mate on one of his first nights as Blackbeard.

Summary
Hermann has missed Newt, missed him for every aching moment of the last ten years, and the thing sitting in that chair, that thing that almost brought about Armageddon, is an infuriating fascimile of the man he once knew.
But Newt is still there. Hermann knows it, has to believe it. And if Hermann is the only one who cares enough to get him back, then he'll risk everything to do so.
Newton Geiszler is not dead. Hermann Gottlieb will bring him home.

Summary
E-Day, Extermination Day, is when everything changed. The Kaiju won, and all the Jaegers were destroyed. Having seen this outcome in the Drift, Hermann and Newt fight to help save humanity and before it's too late and partially succeed, only to be separated. Newt is sure of Hermann's death and secludes himself from the last remnants of humanity.
Five years later, Newt is an accomplished inventor and mechanic and lives happily in his (totally awesome) post-apocalyptic base in abandoned Berlin, occasionally getting visitors asking for inventions or other services. His life is turned upside-down, however, when an achingly familiar face appears in his city...except that it's ten years younger than it should be.
(I'm bad at summaries, I'm so sorry. I promise the story is better. Rating may change in later chapters.)

When the new Marshall is assigned to the base and brings with him, his young daughter; a tight-knit family of outcasts is born. The group, affectionately dubbed, Kaiju Killrrrz, sets out to do what punks do-- rock on with the Marshall's permission of course.
