“Describe it,” Dick challenges.
“I knew his face three years dead beneath a domino. I knew it as he carved a chunk of flesh from his own scalp and cursed my name…” His fingertips drift to a spot two inches behind his ear. Is that uneven texture the sign of a years-old scar, or just a tangle of hair?

With all of that settled, he heaves himself off the exam table where he had been sitting, ready to go home and press an ice pack to his head. Of course, that’s when she decides to mention one last thing.
“Oh, and you’ll need someone to drive you home afterwards.”
