El woke up coughing, a mixture of blood and dust coating her mouth as she tried desperately to pull in a full breath. She was on her stomach, wedged under… something, she couldn’t tell what. She cracked an eye open, almost immediately closing it again when pain shot through her head.
“Hopper?” She whimpered.
There was no response.

Feb. 1985. A trip to Hawkins Lab gone awry. The Upside Down isn't the only thing to test El's powers, or Hopper's willingness to do whatever it takes to protect his kid.

On paper, she had always been his; what an odd notion. She had always belonged to him and to Terry Ives both, the product of some phantom one-night stand. She had never been delivered from the maternity ward to the arms of a sadist who would spend the next twelve years dashing her fragile psyche against the whetstone of Hawkins National Laboratory. It was the life she should have had; the life he was determined to give her, even if he still had eight more months to keep her out of sight.

When Sara was living in the hospital, her parents always held hands and sat close together and smiled sweetly. They took turns doing the funny voices in the books they read her. They said "I love you" a lot to each other.
Now, they only say it to her.

“Do you live sad?” El whispers, holding Will’s gaze, feeling the connection that has always been between them even when they were rarely together. She finds she is grateful that in all of this, she can be closer to Will, that they can know each other in more personal ways.
He shrugs. “Sometimes, I guess.”
“You do not have to move on,” El says, quiet and uncertain. She means the words for Will but does not know how they apply to her. “But maybe we can help each other live just a little more happy.”
