Summary
Martin’s eyes trailed the veins of Jon’s neck. He kissed the soft skin over his pulse.
Then he bit down.
Jon cried out and jerked away. Martin blinked, then slapped his hand over his mouth.

Summary
Or, five times Jon makes Martin a promise, and one time he keeps it.
---
"Normally, in a situation like this, I'd advise you to split up, travel separately," says Basira. Before either of them have a chance to argue, she holds up a hand. "But for obvious reasons, that's a terrible idea right now. So. Keep an eye on each other. Don't make any scenes. Don't go off alone, and don't let each other go off alone." Her voice goes wobbly again at the end of that sentence.
Jon nods seriously and glances up at Martin, whose face is pink. He can't seem to decide whether to meet Jon's eye or look at the floor. "We won't," says Jon, and his words have the weight of a promise. "We'll stay together."

Summary
On the desk is a statement—a statement Jon knows to belong to Andre Ramao.
Jon knows this day. This day dug holes beneath his skin, gouged him, one of many marks much deeper than the outline of a paper clip against his cheek. Not yet, it hasn’t. A glimmer of hope: not yet.
But why here? Why now? There are few days that Jon would voluntarily stumble through a second time, and 29th July is not one of them. So, who chose this?
Or, Jon wakes up in 2016 and gets a second (and third and fourth and fifth) chance.

Summary
‘There’s not a… sixteenth fear entity emerging, is there?’ asked Martin.
‘What? No. Of course not,’ said Peter, frowning. ‘I need you to go and visit Elias and deliver a message from me.’
‘Um,’ said Martin. This sounded worse, actually.
Martin had thought isolating himself from the rest of the world and reading horrible statements about the end of humanity was the worst his job as Peter's assistant could throw at him. It turned out he was very, very wrong.

Summary
So. Martin isn't expecting anything to happen. But then, one day, something...does happen. It happens when Martin is passing Jon in the hall, and stops to ask how he’s doing, because Jon always looks a little bit like hell these days, and it makes Martin feel like he has to do something, and useless small talk is pretty much all he can do, so that’s what he does. And instead of grunting or shrugging or mumbling something dismissive, Jon replies, with perfect, involuntary clarity, "Every part of me aches, and I would just about kill to have someone rub my shoulders right now."
There's a positively deafening silence as they both come to grips with this unprecedented turn of events. Then they both start talking at once.
"Ah," says Jon.
"Wow," says Martin, at the same time.
