Summary
“Have you located a suspect?”
The guardsman shakes his head, “No, sir. The citizens all have alibis, and the sisters can vouch for those taking shelter in the cathedral. Those that aren’t accounted for still haven’t been found.”
The Captain turns on his heel and strides into the small gathering of graves. For the longest time, it eluded him why such a large city had so few burials until he was told that, traditionally, most of the dead are burned, their ashes scattered in the breeze. The ones who opt for a resting place in the ground are usually the old families of nobility, whose storied histories remember a time when the wind was not their friend.
It would suit, then, that a grave robber would target this place.
(Following a sudden earthquake and simultaneous mass graverobbing, the Cavalry Captain Kaeya finds himself to be losing his mind.)

Summary
Jake remembers the last day of his childhood, (of his morals, of his life) if only in a faded, Polaroid memory. The basketball tryout was all he'd ever wanted, all he'd ever dreamed of (you dream small when your world is contained to you and the people you love). He tried so hard, but he didn't make the cut.
(He wanted to be just like his big brother.)
So, Jake. Jake the killer. Jake the General, the World Savior, the murderer of millions, looks himself dead in the eyes (in those old, old eyes) and says:
“Deal.”
(Animorphs/DC crossover, Ft. Ellimist shenanigans, morphing tech mishaps, and the death of empathy in war veterans.)

Summary
Marco dreams of silty lake beds and brackish water. It's quiet. Too quiet. The silence presses on his body, drifting as fragile and delicate as a piece of grass in the current. He can't blink, can't breathe at all.
The next day his dad is gone- out. Somewhere.
Probably to buy locks for the windows.
(In which Marco nearly drowns during a mission, and the incident goes public. Questions are raised.)

"I don't have a dad,” Elijah tells Amara when she asks.
She frowns, “But everyone has a dad.”
He shrugs and picks at his sandwich, “I don't.”
“Oh.”
Amara brought a lunch kit, with round crackers and meat and rectangular bits of cheese that she stacks into tiny bite-sized sandwiches. They crunch loudly, a bit too big for her mouth, and send crumbs scattering onto the tabletop.
(Elijah and family.)

“Right.” Danny nods. His head is heavy and full of cotton. “That's right. Hey, um. Quick question. Did either of you catch Phantom's fight last night?”
Tucker's face is impassive. “Phantom? That a streamer or something?”
Something isn't right. “Um. No.”
“Oh. Wrestler?”
Something isn't right. “No."
(People do plenty of stupid things when they're scared.)

“Well this is certainly a surprise.”
Aiden can't quite keep his voice civil as he eyes the bloodied body illuminated by the light of the men's truck, the night-vision spell warping around his eyes washing everything out into shades of dark gray and green.“Not a welcome one, I assure you.”
(Aiden finds Lumine and his mother just before Noel does. Minor canon divergence.)

Summary
When Jay is twelve, she cuts her hair off.
It's choppy and clumsy, sticking up at the back, a cowlick near the right side of her head pops up and refuses to stay in place. She only had kiddie scissors, didn't trust her small hands with a knife from the kitchen, and there are split ends and the bangs are uneven, cut too far up on her forehead.
She absolutely loves it.
(When Jason is thirteen-and-three-months, he clocks someone in the jaw for saying her.
His knuckles are sore and aching for a full two days afterwards, and he revels in the burn of it.)

Summary
“Remember, Jay. Mind over matter,” Bruce says, like it’s that easy, “Keep your throat closed and your mind focused. You’re nearly there.”
Jason nods, once, then takes a breath that fills two-thirds of his lungs and ducks his head under. Then he pushes his feet against the wall as hard as he can and starts swimming.
Mind over matter, He thinks, and keeps his throat firmly shut.
(Mind over matter, He thinks, as the crowbar comes down again.)

Summary
The kid’s got spunk, alright. He’s wide-eyed and floppy-haired, eager, whole body primed for either a long-distance sprint or a fight the longer he stands and fidgets. His skin is tanned a warm brown, sunburnt only lightly around the edges in the way only a Tatooine-born kid can have it.
There’s potential there, too, Peli can tell. Even as his eyes flick to the exits they’re periodically stopping to analyze the pit-droid Peli’s got with the chassis pulled open tucked over by the door. It’s a clinical, practiced look, the kind you only see on someone who’s worked with droids before and knows what they’re doing.
So she says, “You got tools?” And the kid’s face lights up.
(Or, Peli and Luke, roughly 7 BBY)

Summary
Luke imagines things a lot. Impossible things. Unreal things. Things he’s not so sure he’s just been imagining.
He doesn’t admit it to anyone, because that’s how you get sneered at and scolded for making things up and spat at with freak and weirdo and stop lying.
Things like invisible snakes biting his friends in class and an ocean in the middle of the desert and I'm not Princess Leia I'm Luke I'm not Leia and brown-robed men with wise eyes and I'm gonna be a Jedi and coming home to find Stormtroopers burning down the farm.
And when he thinks I want to go back he imagines himself so far back that he hasn't even been born yet.
He thinks this is probably the most vivid thing he's imagined yet.
(Or: Between the easy way or the hard way, the Force decides to fix things the complicated way.)
(NOTICE: On an indefinite hiatus until I get around to watching and finishing the Clone Wars)

Summary
Han’s doing that thing where, despite acting like he’s not actually worried, keeps jerking in Leia’s direction when she so much as looks like she’s going to trip and hovering protectively if there’s someone in the room that isn’t him or Luke.
It turns into an argument when C3-PO almost runs into her and Han basically explodes and Leia explodes right back and Luke is sitting on the couch with his head in his hands trying to understand the significance of baby bumps and why there would be bumps on a baby. Then comes the subsequent realization that he doesn’t actually know anything about children.
(Or, Leia, Han, and Luke using their four collective brain cells to try and keep a child alive, among other things.)

"Are you really my dad?” The kid says, and wow if there was ever a conversation topic Anakin would rather have avoided this would be it.
He opens his mouth before the kid immediately barrels on, “‘Cause my Aunt and Uncle said he died a while ago but you’re not dead."

Summary
“Yeah, that’s what I said.”
Luke stiffens as Leia bristles. His sixth-sense for Han-Leia arguments starts to shriek like a fire alarm. Artoo gives him a curious beep and Luke silently mouths run at the astromech. Artoo wisely rolls away.
“Uh, no. You’re saying Falcon like Ful-cin. I’m saying Fahl-cun. That’s how you’re supposed to say it.”
Han frowns, “Yeah. Falcon.”
Luke considers playing dead. Leia probably wouldn’t fall for it, though. She can probably see body heat or read his heartbeat or something. Like a snake.
Han and Leia are bickering now and Luke almost wishes he’d asked Artoo to stay. Maybe he could shock Luke into unconsciousness so he wouldn’t have to deal with it.
(Or: Han says 'Ful-cuhn', Leia says 'Fal-con', Luke says 'Fel-cun'. It ends up being a much bigger deal than it should have been.)

“Okay,” Peter claps his hands together and wracks his brain for something to talk about, “Do, uh… do you have a name?”The girl squints at him. Glares, more like.
“‘Cause, I don’t know - I just feel really weird calling you ‘the girl’ in my head. So, a name?”
She shuffles almost uncomfortably and something dawns on him.
“You can’t talk, can you?”
She glares harder.
