    Summary

Fleeing the Balrog and Orcs in Moria, Legolas Greenleaf is shot down with an arrow. He dies upon the bridge, unaware of the fates of his Fellowship, and wakes up moments later with the intention of finding his mother, escaping the Halls of Mandos and re-joining the War of the Ring. This would be a lot easier if he was actually in the Halls of Mandos however, instead of at Losgar as the Noldor arrive in Beleriand from Valinor for the first time.

    Summary

"She has spoken of the colour red to me before."

Relief washes through him. "Red," he says. "She has mentioned it - in conjunction with the wedding?"

Ianthe's smile curves deeper, almost secretive. Amusement flowers in his chest at whatever schemes she and Feyre have been hatching together. "It was one of her only stipulations," she confides in him, "though I think she wants the little touches she has asked for to be a surprise. I'll say no more!"

"Well," he says, sharing a conspirator's smile with her and feeling lighter than he has in an age at the thought of Feyre plotting with Ianthe in the way that he is, "perhaps this can be our secret as well. I want to see her face, when she realises."

Tamlin cares little about how the wedding will happen, so long as he and Feyre are happy by the end of it; he does, however, have one request of Ianthe.

    Summary

"No," he said gently, taking a deep breath. "No, I will not be returning home this time. I have been - Well, I myself swore it - asked to go on a quest, at the behest of Lord Elrond, on the behalf of all Elves. 'Tis secret, so I may not say much, but all races of the Free People are represented - Estel goes! and Boromir as well - and there are nine of us. But the quest will take me far from home and it is perilous, very perilous. A fool's hope, I believe Tauriel called it" - his second gave a terse nod and would not meet his eyes - "but if it succeeds - if it succeeds, the Shadow is banished forever. Our home will be safe from all enemies and truly will be Greenwood again. All homes and havens will be safe, for the Enemy will be no more. I - I may not be there to experience it, is all."

As the time draws nearer to the Quest, Legolas bids farewell to his friends.

    Summary

Isildur's Bane has been discovered, and it is the choice of the Wise that it must be destroyed if the Shadow is ever to fall. A Halfling bears it whence it was crafted, and a company of nine shall accompany him in order to ensure the deed is done. I am one of this company, though Lord Elrond refrains from confirming this in as many words whilst he deliberates, and I am sworn to go some of the way with him. Yet I must confess that I do not believe that the fulfilment of this oath will sway me to abandon the path whilst there is still much to walk, even if to Mordor it must lead, and so I ask (though permission or recrimination shall reach me too late to change my course) for your leave, and the freedom to appoint Tauriel as commander of our forces in my stead. I, as you, remember the dishonour that lost her the position the last time she held it, yet I would suggest that honour has no place in a war such as the one that comes now, and that skill should be the only thing to endure.

Legolas writes home to his father to give news of his quest.

    Summary

This, Lancelot is sure, would be the perfect occasion to draw his sword and be the hero. Duel me, craven knight! he would cry, and Sir Aziraphale would reply, Ah! Thou hast caught me, a villainous knave, in mine own sinful crimes, Sir Lancelot bravest of all knights. Here, Lancelot would be expected to be humble in the face of glory and so would probably same something like, 'tis a victory of the Holy Spirit that moveth me to greatness! or I am the champion of Queen Guinevere! Desist in her name, fool! Then, he thinks, there will be a resurgence in bawdy songs written about him and Lancelot can go on ignoring the fact he is possibly a bad person and an even worse knight by riding the wings of ego.

Lancelot doesn't trust the newest knight- Sir Aziraphale- in the slightest, especially after his triumph against the Black Knight.

    Summary

He sees it all as if in slow motion: Mordred's aborted lunge forward, the flare of his crimson cloak unravelling out behind him; the slash of his hands, gloved and gauntleted, out in front of him to sweep up above his head; the explosion of energy that seems snap out from his skin, flattening his hair to his forehead  dragging back his curls and cloak as if Mordred stands in the centre of a raging storm; and finally, those steady grey eyes flashing a lurid, ephemeral gold, like coins gleaming in the middle of his familiar face.

The spear clatters to the ground, wood on stone. But Arthur isn't looking at it- Arthur's looking at Mordred. Mordred, who is the best of his knights; Mordred, who he knighted and trained himself; Mordred, who has just used magic to save his life.

In the Disir's cave, Mordred saves Arthur's life another way, and Arthur is forced to decide between choosing to love or repeating Uther's mistakes.

    Summary

She can hear the squeal of rubber tires before she actually sees Steve pelting onto her street like the bats of Hell are on his tail and thinks, for a moment, that Billy is back, scorching the roads with his reckless driving. Any second, he'll swing out from the driver's seat of the blue Camaro, cigarette hanging loosely from his scowling lips as smoke drifts across his face, and Max will scarper back up the hall to her room before he sees her. Familiar, routine; she wonders whether, if she had the chance now while still knowing what she knows, she would still run from him instead of tentatively, carefully, extending that olive branch she had once offered when they first met. Wonders whether he would accept it instead of snapping it two and throwing it back in her face.

In the Battle of Starcourt aftermath, Max is struggling with the impact of Billy's death and her mother's spiralling mental health alone, all her friends fixated on the loss of Jim Hopper and the impending departure of the Byers to California come September. But when she gains the friendship of Steve Harrington and Eddie Munson to fight in her corner, things might just begin to change for the better.

    Summary

Lily Potter is going to die.

By the time she reaches the top of stairs, she has recognised this; by the time she reaches the nursery, she has accepted this. There is nothing to be done. Lily Potter is going to die tonight. She supposes that she should have realised that this was going to happen all along, that thinking that she could dodge death was the greatest show of naivety she could have ever disillusioned herself with. Lily hates naivety and hates how stupid and slow she feels when the veil is lifted. The last time she had been well and truly naive had been when Severus had spat a slur at her feet and took her- pathetically- by surprise.

Cooking utensils turn out to be handy in defending against home invasions, as the Potters discover on Halloween.

    Summary

One day, it will become a hefty legacy for her infant son to grow into- a bloody consequence for the bloody price she paid to make sure that her boy could live with enough time to grow into himself, to learn what it truly is to be the child of Lily Black.

(He will never learn what it is like to be child of Lily Evans though. That is a tragedy within itself- that Lily Evans should be buried in an unmarked, shallow grave so that Lily Black can build her monuments over where her decoying bones restlessly lie. Lily Evans who wore contact lens because she was always losing her glasses, Lily Evans who lopped off all of her hair in a pageboy cut on a dare but liked it enough to keep it shorn short for the rest of her Seventh Year, Lily Evans who wove delicate crowns of daisies with her neat nails puncturing the green stems. If Lily Black never grew up, then Lily Evans stagnated at the point between the merest hint of an idea and a faded memory.)

Sirius and Lily Black are dead; James Potter- a traitor- is haunted by the ghost of the woman he loves.

    Summary

Lily shot forward to correct it, pushing his chin back so he was contemplating the ceiling and then positioning him with his limbs in some artful- he supposed- and uncomfortable pose. Then she reached up to the ivy and fairy lights above him and yanked it down to drape around his head like it had over the other side, but then placed both of her hands in his hair to adjust them neatly until he was surrounded by light everywhere he looked. His breath caught in the back of his throat; the lights were reflected a thousand-fold in Lily Evans' eyes, constellations and galaxies and universes all captured in her pretty irises.

"Am I good like this?" he said, his voice lower and huskier than he intended.

Her hands lingered in his hair, her eyes fixed on his face and the polaroid dangling from her arm by a strap. "Perfect."

At a party with Sirius' art friends, James finds himself unexpectedly becoming the subject of someone's polaroid camera.

    Summary

I am not with you now and we are no longer children. The stream and its tame rapids have been replaced with the tempestuous contempt of a river kissing the bitter mouth of the Sea. This time, you don't bother to fight your way to the surface. The water takes you, softly at first. But I know you in a way the tide doesn't: I know that it will take more than the drowning crush of water to silence you. It always has and you are underestimated again.

I think, the Dwarf must be dead.

I think, I am not sorry.

Guinevere: You speak of lost honour?

Lancelot: You vowed that I should retain it-

Guinevere: And you vowed that I should have a husband! And yet here we are, Lancelot. You, an honourless man of honour; me, a husbandless wife.

There's no sunlight and yet the cave is curiously light, lit by an otherworldly glow. Each rock is cast into exquisite detail, sharpened with cold; Odysseus, compelled by something he can't name, shields his eyes against it and waits.

    Summary

Tauriel was no idiot. She could see the resemblance to the woman in Boromir's smile and in his eyes, in the way he had gesticulated in the Council of Elrond and in the way he laughed. Bright and happy and Finduilas- Tauriel remembered her just as well as Legolas did, had spent just as much time with her during Dol Amroth visits and had mourned just as much as Legolas when the missive had came to inform them of her wedding to the Steward of Gondor and later again when they had been informed of her death. She could also see how Legolas rallied around Boromir, like Boromir was the Sun. Or as though he was Finduilas herself, reborn and alive once more.

Boromir was not his mother and she reflected- as she drew to a halt at the same time as the quartet down the corridor- that whatever sacrifices Legolas would make for him would not be worth it.

Tauriel listens to Legolas and Boromir's conversation and thinks on the significance of informality.

    Summary

Yet she keeps her arms light around you, perfunctory, one hand placed unerringly on your waist and the other gripping your hand. It's only the merest of touch, detached and remote, and you for a moment you imagine that you have misread this whole situation. And you would not be surprised for Tauriel is worth so much more, is so much better than you could even aspire to be. A quick parting will be the obvious outcome, you decide.

But she stays for the next song with another smile, the stars reflected innumerable in her eyes, and that, you think with a new spring in your step, is a promise in itself.

    Summary

To say that Sansa was pretty is no compliment- it's a fact that was and had been well known, even when she was but the vain, empty-headed girl who'd longed to leave the North for some stupid prince of one kind or another. And when she and Theon- Reek, he reminds himself- had reunited as Ramsay's prisoners, she had still been just as pretty, though she'd been stripped down to her pretty, brittle bones like a wolf skinned; a fragile, hopeless figure. But Theon thinks she has never been more beautiful as she is now- cheeks flushed red with cold, hair in rampant disarray, snorting noisily as she slurps at her soup and laughs at the bad joke he'd told her about a pirate and a princess- because her eyes are alight with something he could almost call happiness.

Theon and Sansa spend one last night together.

    Summary

Merry and Pippin spun on their heels, feeling Boromir raise his eyes too, and noticed for the first time the approaching Elf. Glorfindel. They hadn't seen him since the Fords when he forced the Riders away and they'd heard he'd been sent patrolling by Elrond after the Council to seek tidings of the Enemy and draw it off if needs be. He'd obviously been back long enough to change out of his travelling gear however and looked the part of the stately Elven lord he was with a handsome green robe that hugged his tall frame and set of his hair, let loose around his waist. Or he would have looked the stately Elven lord if it weren't for the squirming Mirkwood Elf he held tightly by the shoulder.

"I found him climbing the roof," Glorfindel announced cheerfully, "and was almost away before I caught him."

"Caught me?" Legolas scoffed. "You threw a stone at my head!"

Glorfindel smiled serenely, the golden haze around him seeming to flare a little brighter as he did.

Merry, Pippin and Legolas make trouble in Rivendell and Boromir is much too old for this.

    Summary

Though it was just the right side of her profile, Boromir saw her now clearer than he had ever done so before. Ebony skin gleamed in the sunlight, unmarked and perfect, striking in contrast to the trailing ivory dress that clung to her, accenting the wide curve of her hips and willowy tallness of her frame; dark hair was curled into a loose bun that sat low on the nape of her neck, heavy with the weight of a dozen pearls that burst into marble veined glory throughout and strands escaped in a wistful informality; and her face was possible the kindest he had ever seen, with gently smiling lips tugged up at the corners minutely and wide eyes a warm golden-brown that seemed to shine with some otherworldly wisdom. Finduilas on her wedding day, Finduilas awaiting her future. With greedy eyes, Boromir followed her arm as it reached out before her, lingering on where her fingers clasped those of Denethor, his father.

A joining of hands, a union of hearts.

    His mother.

Legolas shows Boromir a surviving piece of his mother's legacy hidden away in Rivendell.

    Summary

It takes Lex years before she can wear her baseball glove again- the cracked leather, the unyielding stiffness, the frayed stitching, all as familiar as the back of her hand ruined by the memory of standing amongst towering emerald tree and waiting for that moment when luck gave out and the monsters that stalked them came finally for their blood. Tim, it seems, dives back amongst his book with the ease he had always done so- Lex looks at her glove and tries not to cry, feeling her breathing hitch and her heart race a mile a minute and her mind spiral backwards to the overwhelming mantra of run run run run run, Lex, run run run. But as her daughter- same messy blonde hair, same mischievous blue eyes, but with her father's nose- hefts the wooden bat up to her shoulder with ready ease, Lex slides her glove on and feels like she's coming home.

Alan, Ellie, Ian, Lex and Tim deal with the events of Jurassic Park.

    Summary

It had been Legolas who could coax her into conversation, Legolas who had returned from the Dúnedain and noticed how she struggled, Legolas who she had sworn to stand by and felt at least some of the affection she had held for him before.

Broken people do not feel- Tauriel didn't either and had told herself that she was broken. Nothing then accounted for the pain she had felt hearing Legolas surge to his feet and pledge his bow to a suicide quest as though his life was something to be taken lightly. It had been as solemn an oath as the Eldar ever made, born of friendship and love, and though Elrond had announced that he would still consider whether there were any others who would fit better on the Quest in the months until the Ring's departure Tauriel knew he wouldn't disregard such a promise. To Mordor her prince- her friend- would then be faring.

After the Council, Legolas' decision to travel with the Fellowship opens old and new wounds.
