Shane answered his phone halfway out of the living room, the voices of his parents becoming vaguer with each step. “Hey, what's–”
“It is gone,” Ilya said, his quiet voice heavy.
Shane immediately tensed. “Are you okay? Has something happened? What’s gone?”
There was a pause, and Shane’s heart started beating, his mind racing with all the possibilities that could have happened.
“My necklace. It is gone."

The meat was burnt. Why did that keep happening?
“Ilya. You're really, really freaking me out right now.”
