I have read and reread this fic multiple times. It is one of my very favorites, and a textbook example of how to make OCs extremely integral to the story and so well delineated that you care as much about them as you do about the boys. The atmosphere and desperation of the Dust Bowl era is depressing because it's portrayed so skilfully. I can't praise this story highly enough. One of the best in fanfic.

In general, I'm not as fond of stories featuring young Winchesters--I prefer just pre-series, or during the series--but Sam and Dean are beautifully portrayed here and so eminently "the boys" even in their youth. The medical jargon and procedures are handled with great skill so that the reader has a sure grasp of the severity of the problems even as we see Dean bounce back, then deteriorate.

This is a harrowing journey as we see a completely wrecked Dean, plus Sam's desperation to try to both care for his brother, and to fix him. The first time I read this I felt like I got punched in the gut. This is beautifully written and meticulously plotted.
