    Nicole tucked a strand of her hair behind one ear. "I used to talk to fill the quiet after... after the curse. When the others fell silent forever, became those drifting wisps. I talked so the world wouldn't forget what we were. What I still am." Her voice dropped. "Sometimes I wonder if I talk too much because I'm afraid if I stop, I'll fade too."

    Varka shifted, armor creaking softly. He reached out and caught one of her hovering hands before she could pull away. His gauntlet was cold iron, her skin glowed warm beneath it, delicate as starlight made solid.

    "You won't fade," he said. "Not while I'm here to hear you."
