Summary
In the original story, during the Summer of 1922, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan were lovers that rekindled after five long years. Gatsby's love for her was intense and obsessive to the point it contributed to his downfall.
However, in this alternating story, set in the Summer of 1924, Nick Carraway greets his neighbor shortly after moving in West Egg and gets himself swiped into Gatsby's shady business. And one night, when Gatsby visits Tom Buchanan for Dinner with Nick, he stumbles upon a young, idealistic girl.
Her name? Daisy.
From there, Gatsby felt the instinctive need to protect her at all costs, developing a great paternal love for her.

I believe I was 4 the first time I heard the name "Jay Gatsby."
It had been during the summer months of 1924, at my aunt Jordan's home.
I had been drawing when I overheard a conversation that would prove to have much more weight than I originally believed.
"It'll be two years now, in a month."
"...my God, it has been 20 years, hasn't it?"
