Five sits down in the shitty motel armchair for a second, and it’s perhaps the first time Vanya’s seen him stay still for longer than ten seconds since they arrived in this unfamiliar 2019.
She looks at him closely while the others clamour around the food. The dark circles under his eyes are prominent and purple, and his skin has a sickly sheen to it. He looks like someone who hasn’t slept in two weeks. And the way he holds himself, as if his ribs are in pain, his limp, the scratch on his neck and the dark, blossoming bruise across his forehead…
Of course, as soon as he catches her watching, he jumps up again. “What is it?”
“Nothing,” she says, startled. “I’m just… wondering if you’re okay. You look like you might collapse any second.”
“I’m fine,” Five says, and she can tell that he is lying.

Set after season two. The Hargreeves siblings - the ones we know and love, not the sparrows - are fugitives, hiding out in a motel room to lay low and lick their wounds. Tensions are running high, but what Vanya's really concerned about is Five - he's hiding something. Something... is really wrong. Vanya knows the signs, and she knows her brother.
He's about to break.

Five kicks out wildly. He hits something - pain rockets through him and a wave of nausea follows. When he turns his head, struggling to breathe, feeling like the car is crushing him, he sees Klaus’ upside-down face, unconscious – dead? – and peaceful, a trickle of red trailing from his eyebrow into his hairline.
“Klaus!” Five shouts, his voice cracking. “Vanya! Anyone?”
No response.
Déjà vu.

“Your siblings came into contact with an unknown substance,” Dad says shortly, not looking up. He drops a sleeping Allison onto the table. “A gas, which they foolishly inhaled. As of now, they are unconscious, and the perpetrator escaped. We won’t know the effects of this gas until they wake.”
“Oh, no,” Vanya squeaks, jumping out of the way when Pogo carries Ben in. He lays the boy down next to Five on the counter. She starts to panic. “That’s bad. What – what if they’re—”
“There is no use in catastrophizing,” Dad snaps. “Restrain yourself, Number Seven, or remove yourself from the room.”

The teenaged Umbrella Academy members are poisoned on a mission, and temporarily lose all their memories. As the only one unaffected (because she was at home) it's up to Vanya to look after and entertain her strange, amnesiac siblings while their Dad creates an antidote. Shouldn't be too hard - all she has to do is keep them from causing too much trouble for a few hours. Nothing like a little memory loss to force people together, right?

“Free day!” Klaus shrieks, banging on Vanya’s door, dragging her from her peaceful slumber, and she startles, rolling out of bed and landing on the floor. “Get up! He’s gone!” She hears his footsteps thumping down the hallway to Luther and Allison’s rooms.
Vanya closes her eyes again. Maybe she can just go back to sleep here, on the floor. It’s not so bad.
“Vanya, wake up!” Five appears in a flash. She pulls the blanket over her head. “Why,” he asks, hauling her up, “are you on the floor?”
“Because I’m asleep,” Vanya groans, her eyes unwilling to open. “Leave me alone.”
“No. Get dressed,” Five says sternly. “I’m not letting you waste our free day sleeping.”

Set when the Umbrella Academy are about thirteen. Reginald Hargreeves is away for business, which means his children have a whole day to spend how they choose. Board games, banister-sliding, and slumber parties are all on the table - but when the Academy is blown up and stormed by intruders, sheltered Vanya is forced to confront the violence of her siblings for the first time.

It's just that Klaus is trying out the whole sobriety schtick once again, largely at the insistence of Diego ‘my body is a temple’ Hargreeves, because hey – he’s done it before, he can do it again, right?
But with sobriety comes dead people. And where little Number Five goes, a whole lot of dead people tend to follow.

Set after season two, with no Sparrows. At the Luther-mandated weekly Hargreeves movie night, Klaus struggles to concentrate on the film. This is largely in part due to the HUNDREDS of ghosts that his siblings have accumulated over the years - like the world's lamest Pokémon - screaming at the top of their metaphorical lungs, all crammed into one room. Throw in some misguidedly concerned siblings and one frustrated medium, and you have a big old melting pot for trouble.

Number Five's final training exam at the Commission before he's cleared as a field agent. The test is straightforward - inflicting torture to obtain information is a standard skill that any agent must be able to utilise with ruthless efficiency. And Five will do anything to get back to his family.

“Fine.” Vanya crawls out from under the chair, standing up but keeping her head down. It's bad enough that the Umbrella Academy had to show up - if Five sees her, he’ll absolutely embarrass her in front of her orchestra friends, and—
“Vanya!” Five says, popping up next to her in a burst of blue. Jessica screams. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Set when the siblings are teenagers - Vanya's with her youth orchestra, on their annual field trip to see a live concert performed at the Icarus theatre. But when the evening takes a dark turn, the Umbrella Academy have to save the day, and they do a very bad job of pretending not to know their littlest sister.

He dreams of the deep blue sky above the city on a cloudless, dry day, and the dark brown colour of the wooden walls and floors of the mansion. The rich red carpets in the guest rooms that the children had always been forbidden from entering, and the crisp white of a new model airplane just out of the box, ready to be constructed and painted. The soft pink of Mom’s skirts, the warm yellow lights strung up around Allison’s bed, the calming teal of the walls in Five and Ben’s bedrooms, the indigo of the night sky.
He thinks that he should have appreciated them more when he had them. Now all he sees is black.

“F-f-fu-fuck you,” Diego spits out, but his heart is thumping hard with fear, and he takes another miniscule step back.
Vanya smiles.

Set when the Hargreeves are around fifteen, though Five is still there, in an AU where Number Seven never had her powers taken from her and was raised as a fully-fledged member of the Academy. Or: Vanya can be a little evil, as a treat.

Summary
Sunday also means dance practice for the Umbrella Academy, and for Vanya, who isn’t allowed to participate in dance practice, it means her weekly violin recital for Pogo and Mom. While the others get to spin and twirl around with each other, she doesn’t even get the luxury of watching.
“Seven is an odd number and we dance in pairs,” they would say apologetically. “You wouldn’t have a partner.”
“I don’t mind. I can dance by myself,” she tried once, when they were eleven, and Allison laughed in her face.
So Vanya, ever the odd number, usually spends Sundays in her room, while orchestral waltzes and two-steps and the sound of her siblings laughing and dancing floats up through the floorboards.
But not today.

A few days after Five runs away, Vanya finally gets to participate in the Umbrella Academy's dance class. However, it doesn't exactly live up to her expectations.

For a moment, they just watch each other, gaping.
The woman is dressed extremely strangely, in a completely white suit that somehow remains untouched by the ash and dirt, pristine and almost blinding against the backdrop of rubble and flames. “Who are you?” she says, and then cringes, puts a hand to her head. “And what happened?”

On his first day in the apocalyptic wasteland, Five is already beginning to lose hope, and thinks he might be the only person in the whole world left alive.
But he soon finds out that he's not.
