Warnings: references to domestic violence, though it is in the past and not depicted on screen, it’s referenced. Also, feelings about being in the closet. Some light suicidal ideation, you know, for the sparkle. May contain: first fumblings towards love. They are just babies, really (though to be clear: they are not actually infants).

Summary
When Steve returns to his Brooklyn apartment as suddenly as he’d disappeared from it, all he can do is stare and blink into the middle distance for a while, his lips still tingling with the warm buzz of kissing Bucky Barnes, heat in his cheeks still blazing.
I was just in another timeline, Steve thinks to himself, as his knees give out and he sits with a plop on his bed. Or another universe? He’s still not entirely sure what the appropriate terminology is. Or maybe he hadn’t actually visited another timeline/universe and he hadn’t seen a bunch of alternate versions of himself, all of them significantly more swole than he is, even the lady version. Maybe it had all just been a really vivid dream. Or maybe he’s had a psychotic break. Maybe there’s a gas leak in the apartment. That happens, right?
Or maybe he really did meet the possible love of his life in another universe. Now it's time for Steve to find him in this one.
[This is a side story to if I'm gonna get back to you someday, following the modern AU, non-serum version of Steve from the clusterfuck of Steves. It might not make much sense without having read that one first.]

Acknowledgement of the existence of scorpions. Extensive discussion of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. The Avengers all live in the tower and the exact timing in the MCU world being *hand waves*
Warnings for: canon typical superhero violence, period typical (the period being present day) transphobia and homophobia. The existence of transphobia and homophobia are central to the plot, but there is no gratuitous detail of people being shitty. Extensive discussion of legislation against gender-affirming care (specifically: the characters are trying to stop such legislation).

But most importantly of all, it is about a love strong enough that even Death couldn’t stand in its way. But Christmas has always been about miracles, and Steve and Bucky have been each other’s since the day they met, and for them love has always tasted like oranges.

“What’s the plural for a group of Steves?” asks Natasha, and it’s weirdly comforting that the question has a hint of whimsical hysteria to it. Good, Bucky’s not the only one who’s not dealing well with all of this.
“A clusterfuck,” he says. “A clusterfuck of Steves.”
Despite how little sense his life has made since he got on a battlefield to fight a bunch of aliens, Bucky's pretty sure he knows exactly what's happened when a much older Steve appears after the mission to return the Infinity Stones: he left Bucky behind to get his much deserved happily ever after in the past. Only then another Steve shows up, and another. And Bucky realizes he still hasn't got any idea what's going on.
What he does have is a whole lot of Steves, a fraught relationship with his own Steve, and tentative plans to leave. But the more Bucky talks to all these different versions of Steve, the more he begins to wonder if leaving really is what's best for him and his Steve, or if there's a way to make something new out of their long friendship.

"Your…cat thinks there’s a snake or a rat or a raccoon in the attic." He leaned out of his door, peering over Bucky’s shoulder. "Are you alone? Do you need someone to help you?"
"No, I’m your neighbour."
"I know," he replied, not sounding even slightly reassured by that fact.
