It started with clear signs Oscar immediately ignored. The ache in his body that was completely unwarranted, since he hadn't exercised today, or the day before; and that, paired with the stomach cramps and general tightness in his abdomen, were telling a familiar story.
Maybe it was the barbecue on Wednesday, or perhaps it's a bug he's dragged from Australia. And jetlag too, that's probably the cause of the headaches. He steps forward tentatively, quietly, not wanting to startle the Dutchman, or let him know of his presence at all, and suddenly the sounds are a lot clearer, and he can hear the words "listen to me, baby" as Max strokes the front wing of the RB21.
The first thing George thinks is that it's surprising that Max uses baby as a term of endearment at all, let alone for his car, the one he'd insisted was a guy, not a girl. It's not like Max is… non-heterosexual, despite the way he stares at some of the drivers sometimes, right? The second thing is, oh, he really is talking to his single-seater.

And George, tired, worn down, no walls left, looked at Max like he was the only steady thing in the room. His hands wrapped around his glass automatically, grateful for something cold to hold onto. He took another sip, hoping it would steady the thrum in his ribs.
It didn’t. Not even remotely.
Max’s grin grew lopsided, curious, and he nudged his glass against George’s. “So,” he said, playful but earnest at the edges, “What makes me so special?”
George went still. The bar noise dipped, or maybe that was just the blood rushing in his ears. He looked at his glass, turning it slowly between his fingers, watching the amber swirl.
There were about four safe answers he could give. He didn’t choose any of them. Instead, he exhaled helplessly. “Because I had to know.”
He looked up, and met Max’s eyes head-on.
Max blinked. Once. Twice. A tiny line formed between his brows. His head tipped slightly, the way it did on stream when he was troubleshooting or reading telemetry.
George felt the exact moment Max started thinking. The silence stretched.
Max’s eyes widened, slow, dawning, terrifyingly perceptive.
George’s heartbeat stuttered.
Max’s voice had dropped in realization. He swallowed, color rising on his neck. He stared at George like he was seeing him in layers, the man across the table, the voice on Discord, the messages, the flirting, the familiar cadence, the things George had said that nobody else could’ve said.
Max sat back a fraction. “…oh, my God.” His breath left him in one sharp, shocked exhale. “It’s you, isn’t it?”
