He could feel the phantom stinging of lacero if he dared to stop playing. He could feel the phantom ache of the slashes against his knuckles or his chest or his back. He could hear his father's bitter, silent disappointment and his mother’s enraged disapproval. Sirius clenched his jaw. There wasn’t much left of the piece. He could do this. He could make it through just one piece. It wasn’t that bloody difficult.

The Grandmaster reaches across the table and taps his fingertips on the back of Loki’s hand a few times before replacing those taps with a slow, stroking motion.
“You have such nice skin,” he says. “Is it all like that? So soft and…” He sighs. “It’s very touchable, has anyone ever told you that?”
Loki puts on his most apologetic expression. “Look, Grandmaster, obviously I’m flattered by your attention, but I can’t… commit to anything right now and…”
The Grandmaster withdraws his hand and sits back in his chair. “Well, that’s, uh… that’s disappointing.” His expression changes to a more speculative one. “Hey, that friend of yours… do you think she’d…?” He leaves the question hanging, a raised eyebrow emphasising the query. But it’s not a question, not really. It’s a statement, and Loki hears the subtext only too well: It’s you or her. Choose.
Not too long ago he’d have seen this as an opportunity to extricate himself from the situation, would have offered up absolutely anyone in his place without even a moment’s hesitation. A lot has changed recently though, and now it seems that he has gained the unfortunate and unhelpful desire to keep the people he cares for safe from harm.
