Compete,” Ilya says—and then, smoothly and quickly, not giving Shane a chance to react, he uses his weight to roll them over, carding a second hand through his hair, combing it back towards the pillow as Shane looks up at him with a gaze so tender it nearly—nearly—makes Ilya want to shy away from it. “But I always win.”

Ilya realized that he had two choices, and neither of them was very good. He could let his teammates believe he was a controlling asshole of a husband, or he could talk to them about things that Shane would probably prefer to keep to himself. He knew how private his husband was, how much time he’d spent cultivating a very particular image of himself to the world. An image of himself that only Ilya and a few other people were ever able to see behind.

“The queerest team in the NHL,” Dillon corrected with barely a beat.
“We must be,” Shane said slowly, expression scrunched up as he seemed to seriously ponder the question. “There might be some teams with a closeted player, or maybe two, but five? Statistically speaking, that’s highly improbable.”

Summary
Newly traded to the Ottawa Centaurs, Ilya Rozanov is so close to having everything he’d never thought he was allowed to want. He can see the man he loves more than four times a year, he’s surrounded by a team who supports him through his injury, and Shane’s parents have unhesitatingly accepted him as part of the family.
Except his lingering concussion symptoms have kept him sidelined from hockey, his boyfriend is still two hours away, their schedules are a disaster, and Shane’s team is, well…it’s full of assholes. There must be a way to make this all work out.

Ilya decides to go find him and talks his boy down from a heart attack (basically, I saw Shane freaking out before the MLH Awards and decided, yeah, he has debilitating panic attacks)
