In which there are doppler shenanigans, terribly tragic love songs, and Geralt's concrete inability to parse his own feelings until it's too late.

Geralt hears him composing his songs, and would find it hard pressed to say what, exactly, is the difference between them and any other ballad, ode or chancel that he hears in the myriad taverns they stay at. But then he hears them again. And again. Everywhere he goes, people are singing Jaskier's songs. His ear for the popular is unparalleled. The bard sits with his lute, thinks for a moment, and then, haltingly, plucks out a melody that rattles around Geralt's brain for weeks.

Geralt doesn’t even bother to look back at him. Nothing good can come with this as a conversation starter.
“Have I ever told you about my parents?”
“No.”
Jaskier sighs. “I suppose not. Well, they’ve written to me. They want me to visit.” He flushes red. “I was...I was hoping you would come with me. They said it’s unbecoming for someone of my age to be a bachelor. And, so I. I, um.”
Jaskier scratches the back of his neck. “I told them I wasn’t. And I maybe sort of perhaps insinuated we were together.”
Geralt can feel a stress headache brewing.

Geralt stumbles upon the old, abandoned altar right beside the cliff’s edge. He’s just killed a basilisk and destroyed its eggs and nest when his medallion starts humming, heats up, alerting him to magic swirling in the air. He’s on guard, always, and, with steel sword drawn, he creeps closer.

Geralt picks up a magic item. He spends an inordinate amount of time time panicking because nice things start happening to him.
Of course, he realizes not everything is about him. But it all works out in the end.
