Far is a new term for them. They didn’t really have too far, before, which Charles supposes is because he assumed they were already as far as they could go. He’d given up his own personal forever for Edwin, back when he only knew him as the lonely spirit who’d said he wasn’t good with people, even after he’d spent an entire night comforting a complete stranger.
They’d talked about it, after.
I had forever, Edwin had told him, smiling ruefully. You only had a few hours. What is that compared with an eternity?
I want that eternity, Charles hadn’t said. Those “few hours” convinced me to sacrifice a lot, Charles hadn’t said. Thirty years convinced me to sacrifice everything, Charles hadn’t said. Everything but being with you.

It’s maybe the worst part of being down here again. Hell had been an unending torment for seventy years, and then he’d been free, and now he’s here again, and he knows somewhere deeper than logic that he doesn’t have the strength to pull himself out a second time. And nobody will come for him.
He whispers it to himself, huddled into the corner, arms wrapped around his legs. He speaks for the doubtful comfort of hearing his own voice, in between the moments where his personal torturer gives chase, and he is forced to run even though he knows he’ll never get away. Nobody’s coming for you. He’s not coming for you. You’re alone. You’re as alone down here as you were back on Earth. You have nobody to blame but yourself. You. Are. Alone.
He’s never going to see Charles again.

There’s a boy leaning against the fence.
He’s putting most of his weight on it, arms propped up by their elbows and staring with rapt interest at the excavations. It’s been half an hour, now, and he hasn’t moved an inch.
If he hadn’t been otherwise preoccupied with delicately troweling between third-century cobblestones, Edwin might have worried about the boy’s mental state. As it was, he’d been studiously ignoring the way he can feel eyes tracking his every movement.

Charles never gave much thought to whether he'd get along with an alternate universe version of himself. Technically, he should, this Charles was just like him: funny, clever, kind - a dead boy detective.
Except, this second version of Charles doesn't seem to know how to keep his bloody hands to himself, and off of Edwin.

Looking at his kids was the easiest way to tell that time had passed, Arthur had realized. No more was he twenty years old with a baby on his hip. That baby had grown up, as did all his other babies. But Percy didn’t sound very grown-up just now.
He and Molly used to laugh with fondness whenever Percy used big words in his sentences. Percy was always trying to act older than he actually was.
When he was eight years old, he would dress as the Minister and make everyone call him Minister Percy. Molly embroidered a patch for him and everything and he’d wear it every single day. Arthur would step in line and ask Percy what the minister would like him to do that morning at breakfast. Percy would smile and say with as many big words as he could fit in his lexicon that he wanted Arthur to do his best.
// Percy Weasley hasn't spoken to his family in months. Arthur Weasley was beside himself. He had to believe that love was enough to get them through the detached, bitter silence, because it had always been enough in the past. Sometimes love was the best thing one could provide.
