Summary
The Withering encroaches over Sumeru at unprecedented speed, faster than anyone ever predicted. Despite the Akademiya's best efforts, there's nothing to be done.
Rather than the Fatui or Celestia it is, of all things, the Black Tide that spells Sumeru's (and the whole of Teyvat's) demise, seeping from the depths with no hopes of suppressing.

Summary
Alhaitham sinks his hands into the tangle of eels and scritches randomly. How long was he out for? His avatar still needs its rest. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for him to have slept a few days away. The eels wriggle happily under his hands. Underground as they are, it's hard to assess the time of day.
It's fine either way. Being notoriously treacherous, it's not uncommon for travelers to take much longer than expected to complete expeditions in the desert. He can always say he was waylaid by wenuts. It's not even a lie.
