“I know,” Mary says, smiling with absolutely overwhelming fondness at him. She rubs her hand over Matthew's palm, her fingers slow and gentle. Mary is not demonstrative with her words but she never hesitates to show how much she loves him. “Anyways, I think we should try it.”
“What?”
Matthew’s mouth drops open and the word comes out in a strangled breath. For a second he cannot form coherent thoughts. Of all the things Mary might say, that was absolutely the last thing he expected.
Mary gives him an askance look that says keep up, darling. “You want to take me over your knee and punish me like the spoiled girl I am. I want you to do it.”

The morning after the Netherfield Ball, while Mr Collins is proposing to Elizabeth, Mr Bennet collapses.
