The first time Ren disappears, Martyn doesn't think much of it. They haven't been allied that long, they don't have any real enemies to speak of, and Ren is his own person. He can do whatever he wants, and it's none of Martyn's business.
When Ren disappears the next few times, it's still none of Martyn's business. Goodness knows he's got his own personal things going on that he doesn't particularly want to share, even with people who are ostensibly his friends. There's no reason Ren would be any different.
When Ren gives him the axe; when Ren orders him to take his head; when Ren becomes the Red King and Martyn becomes the Red King's Hand, though…
Now, it's become Martyn's business.
