Summary
Trisha Elric dies from illness when Ed and Al are only 5 and 4. Her sister-in-law, and Ishvalan widow living in the far eastern mountains takes them in, but ultimately the boys lose her and parts of themselves to the war. Ending up in Central they are found by the genius Hohenheim who claims them. A cold, callused man he uses them for their skill in alchemy, forcing Edward to join the military to advance the man's ambitions and to set a game with the Fuhrer.
Struggling to survive is all Ed knows. Distrustful of his military superior, beaten down by Hohenheim, and constantly worried for his brother, he somehow starts to find place with Mustang's Team.

At 12 and 11 with an absent father and dead mother, these boys haven't learned much about everyday life. Mustang and his team teach them and along the way learn some things themselves. First year of Ed's time in the military and focuses on how he and his brother bond with everyone. Series of one-shots.

‘‘I used to think Fullmetal was a crude nod at your prosthetics…’’
Roy Mustang’s words were laced with a thoughtful hum, and Edward tried not to feel hurt by the misassumption. Many heard his title and assumed it came down to his automail arm and leg. Ed had just hoped the Colonel – after everything – would’ve been different; that Mustang would’ve looked past Edward’s ill-fitting uniform and cripplingly-heavy automail and only see him as a person.
‘‘But,’’ Mustang continued, pensive, ‘‘I think they spelled your title wrong. You’re not Fullmetal, you should be Fullmettle. As in, you are full of mettle.’’
Edward blinked, utterly baffled.
‘‘Mettle, kid. M-E-T-T-L-E.’’
Mustang spelled it out for him. Literally. A genuine smile tugged at the Colonel’s lips as he rumbled out a fleeting chuckle, affectionately sweeping a hand over the top of Edward's golden crown. The boy's throat constricted as an annoying warm blur suddenly invaded his vision. He had experienced more kind words and actions under this man’s brief command than he had experienced in a long, long time.
It was just a shame that it was only a temporary arrangement.

"The North?" Edward asked incredulously, gaping at the order.
"Yes, Fullmetal, the North. There's an outpost fifty kilometers from the Drachman border, and the previous person stationed there has taken an abrupt leave for around a month or so. Führer Bradley himself has ordered that you see to looking after it until around January when she comes back from her leave." Mustang looked at him with slight irritation over his stack of neglected and overdue paperwork, as if he couldn't believe Edward was angry over being sent halfway across the country.

Summary
A rumor had spread around the higher ups of Eastern command, one so exciting that every colonel and brigadier general was buzzing around the command trying to get a lick of what everyone had been whispering about.
It was a very undercover operation, but Roy has ears everywhere.
Apparently there were incredibly powerful alchemists, two brothers that went rogue. It was rumored that the men were masters of the science; they had been hiding out in some tiny farming town. And when some officer had gone off to try and recruit them, instead he had found the aftermath of two human transmutations and much more depravity in the burnt remnants of their small cottage. The alchemists were nowhere to be found.
Now every power hungry officer in Eastern Command wanted to catch the alchemists and claim the biggest promotion of a lifetime. However there was nothing else to aid in the search for the brothers, hell it was still up to debate if there were two people. Risembool was a tight lipped town and the house, the site of their crime, was mostly a pile of ash.
But Roy is going to be fuhrer
