Yan Wushi observed the changes in Shen Qiao’s expression, his own moving into something subtle. And rather unexpectedly, he softened his voice to say, “A-Qiao, don’t be too sad. Xie Ling may be gone, but this venerable one has to admit you’ve done me a great favour.”
“Yan-zongzhu is overly gracious,” he replied curtly.
“So even if Xie Ling is no longer here, this venerable one can feed you in his stead—”
“Yan Wushi!” Shen Qiao suddenly burst out warningly. He couldn’t understand why the other man was bringing up Xie Ling over and over again. He’d done so a few times before in a mocking fashion, but today seemed especially excessive—and if Xie Ling was already long gone now, what was the point of still harping on this matter?
