“I can tell that your shoes are making your feet hurt,” he shrugged. “I can carry you so why wouldn’t I?” Annabeth felt her skin heat up, and she leaned in to kiss his cheek, leaving behind a slight stain of her lip gloss. She didn’t think he’d mind.

“Yes, we are,” I say as I put down my cup and cross my arms tightly over my chest. It looks defensive, but it feels more like a shield against the weight in my ribcage. I just need to hold myself together, literally — because I feel like if I don’t, something in me might come loose.
He nods slowly. “Okay.” He doesn’t say more, just waits, letting the silence stretch in that patient way he does when he knows I need time to get the words out.
I shift from one foot to the other. The weight of the room feels heavier than it should. Outside the window, the hum of the city fills the space between us, faint but steady, like a quiet pulse reminding me of all the things that aren’t Linfield.

Whether it be gold, or territory, or something else altogether, if a sea god possessed it, it was theirs. It wasn’t just sea gods either. Those that came from the sea, whether that be god, demigod, or human alike, had the same affinity for possession. It just hadn’t ever really applied to Percy until then.
