Suisei looked over to her left and blinked. The demon’s attention was caught by the screen, rapt. Black oil slid down her face, dripped onto the shirt Suisei had loaned her. Her hands dug into her thighs, and for a moment Suisei feared that she would draw blood, a moment of weakness where she reached out and took the demon’s hands in her own.
“It wouldn’t have hurt me.” The demon said matter-of-factly. Because she knew Suisei already knew.
“Yeah.” Suisei didn’t let go.
“You never asked me my name.” It sounded almost hurt. The demon looked back towards the television screen, the bright lights of a burning car on her face, bright oranges and yellows. Those weren’t Suisei’s preferred colors at all, but she knew right then that if she could paint, this would be her holy image hung on her wall.
“Hello there,” Suisei said, never one to be beaten. “What’s your name?”
The film’s credits rolled, not on a black screen, but the continued frame of the burning car. The demon’s eyes were wide, acid green, and Suisei felt like drowning wasn’t a bad idea.
“My name is Towa.”
