The girl paled as soon as she opened the dilapidated door, but she steeled herself and guided him inside, and it was then that he saw it, the carnage that was inside of what used to be a quaint little home. Corpses of people strewn about carelessly, their blood seeping through the tatami floor— Mom, Takeo, Hanako, Shigeru, Rokuta — seemingly against his will, his knees crumpled down onto the floor, tears filling his eyes as his throat let out the most agonizing sound…
And it all came rushing back.

“Piloting’s fun, it’s you and your drama that’s eating my life right now,” Thirty complained. “Hey, why does everyone keep asking me if you’re eating enough? Nobody ever asks me if I’m eating enough. I’m just your pilot to these people. Which is a ‘prestigious’ position I don’t ‘deserve’. I think you don’t deserve me .”
“Cody used to vet all my personal pilots,” Ben said, unimaginably depressed. “Only the ones with the safest track records for me. As if my master wasn’t in the cockpit half the time!”
“That Darth Vader guy, right?” All of the clones around Thirty flinched, but he didn’t seem to notice. “I bet I’m a better pilot than he was. Honestly, Darth Vader sounds like a bit of a bitch.”
“You know,” Ben said, fighting the urge to laugh at the mention of Anakin Skywalker for the first time in years, “I think you might be right.”

“We’ll need your name if you’re staying upstairs,” said Bruce, seizing the chance to pump him for more information. “We can’t call you ‘Nightwing’ in front of the rest of the staff.”
The man in front of him visibly went through a whole process of trying to come up with a different pseudonym. It was extremely obvious. He bit his lip in two places. His eyes darted.
“How about Robin?” he said at last.
“Robin…?” Bruce fished for a last name.
“…Hood?”
“Of Sherwood Forest, I presume,” said Alfred, returning with a stack of clean towels, a set of pajamas, and a monogrammed toiletry set from the hotel downstairs.
Bruce sighed. “Look here, Mr. Hood—”
“Please. Mr. Hood is my brother. I’m just Robin.”
“—Let’s not be too obvious about your dubious origins,” said Bruce.

Bruce turned him gently by the shoulders and looked him in the eye. “Every night, I wished I could’ve saved my own parents. If I had the chance to go back and save them, I’d do it in a heartbeat. What makes you think I wouldn’t save yours?”
Dick’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. Speechless was a new look on him.
“When I saved them, I hadn’t yet realized who they were. I didn’t know if Grayson was a family name or a brand name. I didn’t know if they were your trainers or your mentors or your parents. But even if I’d known everything you knew, even if you’d told me they had to die for the good of the universe, did you really think I could just let them fall, after what happened to me?” Dick flinched away from his wording, and Bruce felt his anger melt away. “I would have saved your parents a thousand times over, in this or any other universe.”
