Merlin didn't mean to become the Spymaster of Camelot, honest.
It just kinda…happened.
It's not Merlin's fault that when the Purge happened, the previous Spymaster was a known (but not very powerful) sorcerer, and was also young enough to have not yet taken on and trained a successor. In all the chaos, Uther had had to be much less discerning about choosing the man's replacement, and his focus was, and continues to be, locating ‘evil sorcerers’ rather than literally anything else.
In the end, Merlin was the perfect storm of charisma, power, knowledge, connections, and skill.

“You…observing?”
“Yep.”, grinning slyly he lifted his jug, “Who do you think pays for all this?”

“Yes. Does that make me a monster?”

“I’ve always been a monster in other peoples eyes. Now I simply chose to embrace it.”
Stepping closer, lifting his lovers jaw and looking deep into his eyes he stated, “You could never hate me, could you.”
In short, Merlin is killing people left and right, protecting Arthur and gathering allies. He started enjoying it too, a quality that was surely fired on by the personality traits of a dragon manifesting.
Enjoy Merlin going berserk with him and Arthur fucking in between in differently detailed scenes and ways (including flashbacks of the first time etc). Morgana and Merlin as a magical bamf duo happens as an act of revenge at the end. -

At this, the knights and Arthur blanch as one. Of course he is possessed, Gwaine won't use a proper title to save his life."I am not possessed..." Gwaine declares, looking directly at Arthur, then a bit to his left, gaze softening almost imperceptibly, expression incredulous as he says, "... especially not by a fictitious arthropod/villain of a show that doesn't air for 1500 years."
Arthur cannot tell you what the bastard meant with such an absurd proclamation, considering how it was utter codswallop. But Merlin seems to understand something he doesn't, and gives out a sort of 'meep' sound.

Arthur smiles and tips his head back, trying to catch a glimpse of sunlight on his face. He throws his arm around Merlin’s shoulder to pull him close and says, “That he is; luckily for me, I have an amazing boyfriend who somehow thinks I’m a damsel in distress.”
Merlin laughs and wraps his arm around Arthur’s waist, his eyes bright in the tentative sunlight. Arthur thinks that the best decision he has ever made was to antagonise a random guy in a gym, and getting put on his back for it without any mercy.
Or, five times Arthur appreciates Merlin's skill, and one time Merlin makes good use of it.
