I never confided in y’all how I became trash for Engineer/Soldier. It happened pretty recently with a story I was working on. I intended for them to only be very close buddies, but apparently the story had its own plans.

Guillermo can smell the blood sticking to his fur collar, thick and rusty. He touches the back of the chair opposite Guillermo’s with a broad hand, tilts it back and says, “Can I sit down?”
Guillermo says, “Why are you covered in blood?”
“I fell. Can I sit?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Thank you.”

I have thoughts! At first I thought this was going to be a tense getting-together-maybe fic. I kept looking for something happening that would fuck it all up for them. Nandor is Nandor from the 60's, and he treats Guillermo like that Nandor probably would, soft and awkwardly flirty. And Guillermo is written perfectly. This is very Guillermo in that era- anxious and terrified. The characters feel very true. I think this could be read as fluff. It could be said (though I don't feel this is true) that nothing bad happens to our boys.
But that's if you read it out of context of the times.
This story is incredible w/o my comments. To myself- I think this exemplifies a story that would be very challenging to understand in it's entirety if you don't have a grasp of what the 1960's-1970's were like. Which is really interesting to think about. For me, this story is full of so much tension and anxiety. I wonder if some folx who read it won't understand why Guillermo was nervous around Nandor- not because he's a vampire, but because he's attracted to him. (Though there are context clues, such as what happens to Guillermo's neighbors.) Tension is also ratcheted up with confusion- you don't really know what's up with the rando dog, and the black out gets you lost with Guillermo.
There are two stories in one, here. Nandermo meet-cute via stolen horse, and also, vampirism as a metaphor for queer liberation (as tagged by the author.)
You can enjoy the whole story without the knowledge of Queer life in that time period, but to really juice it, get all the fullness of it, will take research.
I wonder how to define that. How can you explain an almost ephemeral idea of in between-ness, where incidental cultural knowledge changes the way a story is interpreted? That feels important.

Ed flicks at the parchment with the back of his hand, and, curiously, Stede opens it to find…
The instructions.
“...He can't write,” Stede says, realisation dawning.
“He can't write.”
(OR: The Swede invents flat pack furniture. Ed isn’t used to failure. Stede is. They get through these trying times together, and maybe have a little sex about it. Heavy on humour, heavy on Big Feelings~)
