The Tour de France.
One of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, known by everyone, the pride of a country, the biggest event in the cycling season. Months worth of preparations, countless hours of sweat and tears, strategies with back-up strategies with back-up strategies for if the back-up strategies failed, every move planned to the second, barely recovered injuries and weeks of preventing more injuries.
All of it was meticulously planned down to the smallest detail by every party involved so that the only thing that could go wrong was in the hands of the peloton.
Turns out that someone, somewhere, somehow, managed to screw it up.
Spectacularly.

In any case, Basil has learned that if Val misses a morning, he doesn’t show up at any other time. One of the few things he can say with confidence about the other. Because despite Basil’s best, most talkative, and most little brother of two-honed ability to ask the annoying questions, he’s still only partially pieced together the full sketch of Val. It stays more of a rough outline, despite everything, if he’s honest, the first gestures of charcoal on a page. And that makes his artist’s brain go into hyperdrive, raring to shade in the rest. Color, shadow, depth, dimension, he’s itching to find them, to be let in. So he can see. He always wants most to see the truth of his subjects. But he wants it more than usual now. He won’t admit everything about what he wants with Val, not even to himself. But he can admit that much.
Val doesn’t make it impossible. He doesn’t make it easy either, though.

In a blink, the hard edges of Dorian are molten, melting into syrupy sweetness. He’s smiling now with the true innocence of an angel, voice gentled to a silken drawl when it next sounds. Any last traces of rage have wiped to nothing. “But if I didn’t, how could you come to my rescue?” A little bit of a grin arrives on his lips, and he rolls onto his knees as though in prayer, teeth shining up at Val, suddenly adoring as he all but coos, “My white knight on a horse.” The words come drenched in that Dorian special, an impossible blend of sarcasm and sincerity that mix together so thoroughly it’s impossible to discern one from the other.
Val hates him a little bit.
He hates him a lot.

Well, Val doesn’t know very much about art or poetry. And spectacle, that he wants least of all. But it’s hard to resist Dorian’s whims when they whirl to life, hard to untangle himself from the way the other so easily draws him in with little more than a raise of the brow.
With the barest brush of a finger.

There’s a pregnant pause between them. A silence that stretches long wherein Basil’s finger is still on Val’s chest, and his eyes, tilting in almost slow mo, shift up and up and up until they meet the curious blue-grey ones that peer unreadably back at him. There’s a touch of almost amusement playing along Val’s mouth, though, as they exchange stares, and Basil feels his own lips smiling back, a little sheepish.

It’s nice, Val considers idly, the smile, crinkles the other’s cheeks, and lights up his face. Sunshine in the dust. In the sunshine, even dust looks magical. And that smirking cruelty, which his eyes keep scanning for, which he’s learned is always somewhere waiting to emerge, seems farther than ever. There’s something whole about the other, something that hasn’t been shattered into a million component parts and then poorly glued back together, held together by bruised skin, pulled too tightly. He’s not free of sadness, exactly, it drifts through him, but with more poetry and composure than Val could ever manage.

And somehow, even in the low light, Valentin gleams. It’s not Dorian’s fault he’s impossibly fascinated when this exquisite misery burns so brightly before him. Begs for fingers to be drawn through it, to be broken down into its component parts and thoroughly examined. Dorian has always been a keen admirer of beauty. And he’s long promised not to deny himself any sort of pleasure. And the slope of Valentin’s broad shoulders, easily many times his size, but slumped and furious. Oh, there’s pleasure in that.
