“…He may be going through a lot right now, but he’s not one to skip for no reason,” He replies softly, looking over at him with uncertainty in his eyes.
Mike sighs. “True. Sorry… that was a dumb question. I guess I… I’m just trying to make conversation,” He smiles, a mix between sheepish and awkward. As silly as it sounds, Will can’t help but understand, and he smiles back.
“I get it,” He murmurs, biking a little faster to lead the small troop. His heart is pounding in his ears, his brain playing Mike’s stupid smile over and over in his head like a never ending cassette tape. Will was so sick of it, but at the same time, he wishes it would never end— him seeing that smile that only he gets to see. It’s selfish, so selfish of him, and he’ll never let himself hear the end of it.
OR: a close-to-canon, divergent rewrite of Season 5 with canon-typical violence and canon-typical (internalized) homophobia. Alternating POVs (Will/Mike). #bylerendgame.

When the Earth splits in four and the Military takes over Hawkins, the party has to work in secret to protect Eleven and find Vecna before they are arrested or the world ends - whichever comes first. But trying to keep their heads down and a low profile is hard work when half of Hawkins is blaming Hellfire for everything that has happened, and every day is a battle to not get beaten up. At least Will is back in town, and he's living with Mike now, and that's completely uncomplicated. Friends? No thanks... Best friends! That's absolutely all Mike wants. Just because the world has gone to shit doesn't mean it's weird that Mike is the happiest he's ever been.
A canon compliant story set during the 18 month time skip between ST4 & 5 that follows the party as they adjust to life in quarantine, set up The Squawk and start up The Crawls.

He thinks of Will a few hours ago, his head thrown back in laughter. Then he thinks of Will storming out of the basement last summer. Will biking away. Will drenched and standing in the wreckage of Castle Byer. He feels something twist in his stomach.
“I know. I mean – I mean you looked happy.”
Will’s eyebrows furrow as Mike stutters.
“I’m sorry. For summer. For ignoring you. I wish…I wish I had –”
“It’s okay,” Will says softly. “Really, it’s okay.”
