Dream has spent seventy years trapped - unspeaking, near unmoving. He will not capitulate. He will not give in.
But that doesn't change that he can't help but dream too of a day of when he is out, able to return to his realm and function... freedom (in a sense) from this glass prison - though... his function... that overwhelming responsibility...
It doesn't matter... he may never get out... no one is coming... no one will help... he's alone. Even if he dreams of another world where that isn't true. It's fleeting, but he is Dream of the Endless.
And it's all he desires.
**When Roderick decides on using a spell, as a last ditch effort, to get his son back, he doesn't realize the catastrophic outcome of trying to force an entity of fantasy and reality to conform to him - to create a son reborn.
AKA Roderick accidentally turns Dream into a two year old... and everything falls down from there.

Summary
Contrary to belief, the Endless did not know all. They were not the most powerful beings in the universe. They existed to serve the world they were born into by Time and Night. Time and Night, who in turn, only existed by a wave of the hand by the Creator - when the universe was born.
What was known was that Lucifer and Michael were fated to fight until the end of days - the war between the silver city and Hell constant and ruthless. However, it was not fought directly by them - but by their cohorts... demons for Lucifer and Nephilims for angels.
Nephilims were feral beings, no better than demons - only marked with grace and wings instead of blackness and horns. Creatures that were vicious and ravenous - feasting on the blood and essence of their enemies.
The Endless did not know everything, but even Dream knew that it was best to never meet a Nephilim without a muzzle... and better yet, it was best to not cross the considered leader of the Nephilim, the only female - Mikayla.
But as said before... the Endless... Dream did not know everything. He did know duty. He did not know her.

Summary
Although she hears it constantly, Death knows it's not truly her fault when mortals' time comes to pass. She may help ferry them, but she does not kill them - not truly. She may help with the circumstances, she may help nudge them, but she doesn't murder anyone. Her function was the most natural part of every mortal's life. She took joy in her function.
Which would never change. Shouldn't change.
Except it does. All of it does. Everything comes falling down and apart when it's not Dream that's taken by Roderick but Death. And it's Death who suffers his hospitality, and it's Death who is faced with a choice every week to let a man die or save Randall.
Every day, she's called a murderer. Death is not... she won't... but perhaps for Roderick and company, when she is free, she'll make an exception... and she's certain she'll take quite a bit of joy from it.

The warden could barely see past her hands in the dark, despite the fire snapping and crackling consistently. That ever mechanical flame, flickering in and out of reality, always brought her comfort.
