Summary
There is a special event going on in the city where the park is located called 'Running of the Apes', and Mordecai and Rigby are excited about the event. The duo ask Benson for permission to take the day off work so they can partake in the event, but Benson forbids them from participating in the event because they have been slacking off on their duties and for their own safety due to the harsh nature of the event. Benson's refusal motivates Mordecai and Rigby to find a way to ditch their jobs so they can attend the event. When Benson eventually catches the duo trying to leave work, he puts his employees in a dangerous situation as a way to teach them a valuable lesson about the consequences of participating in the event.

Mordecai and Rigby are on the verge of being fired from their jobs at the park after they accidentally destroy Mr. Maellard's mansion while slacking off on their duties. The duo convince their boss, Benson, to give them a chance to redeem themselves in order to prove they are mature enough to handle their jobs properly. Benson reluctantly gives them an opportunity to earn their jobs back, that opportunity being to substitute for Scoutmaster Lumpus and Slinkman at Camp Kidney while Lumpus and Slinkman are on holiday. If Mordecai and Rigby succeed, they keep their jobs, but if they fail, they will be fired from their jobs permanently. While Mordecai takes the role as Scoutmaster seriously and becomes a role model for the campers, Rigby does not, and he ends up being a bad influence on one of the campers. Rigby not taking the job seriously puts his and Mordecai's positions at the park in jeopardy.

Summary
Benson permanently fires and bans Mordecai and Rigby from the park, their place of employment and residency, after an incident involving a stunt. The two friends must now find a new job and a new place to live or else suffer a life of poverty. The duo view a commercial for 'Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends' and become inspired to live there since they can pass off as imaginary friends and won't have to find another job since they will have everything they need at Foster's for free. Mordecai and Rigby are welcomed into Foster's where Mordecai ends up in relationship with Frankie much to Rigby's jealousy. The duo start living a carefree lifestyle at Foster's, but they eventually discover that they could be adopted and would have to move out of Foster's and into another home should that happen. Meanwhile, Benson starts to miss having Mordecai and Rigby around and wants them back working at the park. When Benson eventually finds out about Mordecai and Rigby's whereabouts, he tries to adopt them before they're gone for good.
