"This was supposed to be a normal battle.
But it was too late. They messed up. The weapon algorithm on this enemy was something they’d never seen before. They had no time to react.
All Keith could remember was the groan and explosive shatter of metal and glass as the weapon aimed fast and true right at the head of Voltron and fired on full blast. And Shiro’s voice as he cried out over the com when his lion took the full brunt of the explosion."
OR that AU where Shiro is presumed dead and the Paladins of Voltron grief while trying to uncover Galran secrets.

Slow burn (expect VERY slow burn) Klance story set between the end of season four and the start of season five (or at least, that's where we start). “But I’m not scared of you. And you’re not going to hurt me.” Lance said earnestly. It shouldn’t have come out so strong and confident, really, because up until he’d come in here he’d been pretty damn terrified. “You know why?”
“Why?”
“Because you’re the same man that you’ve been since you escaped. Since you came back with ridiculously long hair and cut it ridiculously short by accident. You’re the same man that had too much on his plate and overworked himself, and that played Monsters and Mana with me and just wanted to be a Paladin. And you’re the same man that told me he didn’t feel like himself, because he didn’t know who himself was. But you can find out now.”

Lance barely escapes, and Shiro tells the rest of the team that he is dead. When Keith hears the news, he goes dark in his efforts to bring Lance “back” from the dead. Light-years away, Matt Holt pulls Shiro out of a pod in a Galra laboratory. Bookmarker's Notes
So much happens and my emotions are reeling. SPOILERS:
The paladins get taken to an alternate universe where everything is the same, but Keith DIES at Naxzela. Cue angst where he both gets confronted by his paladins and has to try to comfort the alternate ones. At one point they celebrate Keith's birthday which sounds fluffy but quickly made me cry when they go visit alt Keith's grave. Then, you have alt Shiro warning Keith about thier Shiro being a clone (Kuron) and a fight ensues. Keith gets friggin stabbed twice by Kuron and if that wasn't bad enough the original paladins, after barely getting him to a pod in time, have to worry about getting him back home. While healing, Keith talks with his alternate self in the afterlife, where he's asked to give messages to his alt self. Oh yeah, all during this there's some heavy klance pining which gets resolved in a very satisfying kiss after he's healed. So, after speeding up the healing process, Keith is ok and gives the alt paladins his counterparts messages. Cue me crying again. The original paladins return through the rift but Keith's wounds reopen, cue angst as he almosy dies, again. But, he seems okay and the paladins move on with thier lives. Meanwhile, the story jumps back to the alt universe. After a touching moment where we meet Krolia at Keith's grave, we learn Voltron wins the war and returns to earth. After 70 years, all the paladins and alteans pass away. And in the scene that made me sob like a baby, Keith and Lance are reunited, the paladins and alteans are reunited, and with thier families. And it's all okay in the end.
The only thing not okay are my emotions: I binge read this all in one sitting and afterwards my shirt was wet from crying so much. At the same time, I loved every bit of it. -
