“I’m just so proud of you, baby.” He feels a weight lifted off his shoulders- which is ridiculous, he’s ridiculous for thinking that she would be anything but proud. Nonetheless, he feels relieved. He smiles, fiddling with his fingers again.
“It’s really nothing.” He says, “Mike keeps talking about how they’re innate but…but they’re not. They’re siphoned, from Vecna.” The mention of his name makes Joyce’s eyes go wide.
“Well, last I checked no one else can do that.” She shrugs, her eyes still wide. Will chuckles, looking at the floor, “Hey, all I’m saying is that I think you need to have a little more trust in yourself.” She leans forward, putting a hand on his cheek. He leans into it, into the warmth of her hand, “You didn’t fail, okay?” She says, and he nods, even though he doesn’t really believe it, “You saved Mike- all your friends. You did that, baby.” She shakes her head, “Not Vecna, just you.”
Will can feel himself tearing up for about the millionth time that night, “I can make it right.” He settles on, “We just need a new plan, a better plan.”
Right, a better plan. Easier said than done.

“Will Byers?”
Will glances around, as if there is another Will Byers in their vicinity. He manages a small smile. “Yeah, it’s- uh. It’s me.”
Mike rushes forward, and all he can think is holy shit, Will is alive, as he’s throwing his arms around the other boy and tugging him in for a crushing hug. It isn’t until Will is secure, nestled–maybe a bit stiffly–in his arms, that Mike starts crying.
“I thought you were dead,” Mike murmurs, muffled by Will’s jacket. He sniffles. “I thought- we- they told us you were dead.”
Or, Will was never found in S1, but survives in the Upside Down until 1987 due to his powers and connection with Vecna. Cue Mike, an ill-timed trip to the Upside Down, and a lot of feelings.

Her eyes turned slowly from his face to his hand holding her wrist tightly. His fingers didn’t just let go— they uncurled one by one in the lamp light like he was forcing a rusted trap open.
Clara’s hand fell between them, empty. She didn’t move right away and watched his face searching for a crack, or a sign he wanted her to disobey him.

It was the summer of 1992, and the Party was spending the Fourth of July with the older young adults at Robin's uncle's house. Mike is slowly coming to terms with the realization that he might like Will Byers in more than a best friend way, and always has, with the help of Lucas and the rest of the group. And Will is coming back to the realization that he was never quite over Mike Wheeler, which everyone else seemed to know.
