....are you sure it was just a crush? ." Mike was speaking again, hesitantly, and he looked like he was asking the most horrifying thing his brain will allow.
Will felt a jolt, deep in his soul. He turned away and closed his eyes quickly to bite back some of the pain in his heart.
"Yeah I'm sure. It was nothing Mike, just a stupid coming of age crush - gone before it even had time to leave a mark." He swallowed, hoping Mike wouldn't hear the wobble in his voice.
Mike was still standing, frozen on the stairs so Will forced himself to half turn back again as he started to walk up. "Seriously Mike, don't even think about it any more, I don't."
And he walked out of the basement door into the hallway to join the others.
Mike was left on the stairs. Hope dead in his eyes. A single tear begging to be released. His heart aching in his chest. He was too late.

Set in the 18 month time skip between the final battle and graduation. Mostly from Mike's POV, but switches between him and Will at points.
Kinda slow burn, Mike's crushing realisation that he is in love with Will, followed by months of angst and miscommunication. Eventual smut and a whole lot of fluff. -

Summary
After they kill Vecna the party is slowly settling back into what is normal Hawkins. They are finishing their junior year with little- to no effort after saving the entire world- but it's the last week of school so who cares.
Will, who came out to all of his friends on what felt like a helpless whim, begins to painfully pull himself back into his shell due to some quiet embarrassment and the party slowly starts to grow concerned. The true reason is not that he’s ashamed of who he is… entirely- more ashamed of all the time spent pining for his best friend Mike. He decides it's best to keep his feelings to himself, to not ruin the party and it's slowly eating him alive.
Everything changes the last week of school
Specifically, on the last day of school, the party decides to sneak drinks into Mike’s basement for an end of the year bash. Mike gets a little messed up things get a little more complicated for both Will and Mike. -

I am bitter about the majority of Season Five, so here is a rewrite more rooted in the small town horror of Seasons One and Two. Will include Byler, actual stakes, fights that are not Marvel-ified, consequences, deep talks, Mike has a braincell and uses it, questions answered etc.
[EXCERPT:]
Ca-clunk. The radio clicked on by itself, and Mike dragged his hands down his face. Here came the regularly scheduled military broadcast!
“Attention citizens of Hawkins.” A resonating male voice garbled out of the speaker. “It is currently 5:43 on Sunday, November 1st. Curfew remains sharp at 6:00. All citizens are required to return to their residencies immediately to satisfy this curfew. If you are unable to return to your house by this time, please approach your nearest friendly soldier or officer, and they will be happy to give you a ride free of charge. Help keep Hawkins safe and do your part.”
Mike’s eyes strained from how hard he was rolling them. He jabbed Will with his elbow. “Help keep Hawkins safe, my ass. What do you think they’re really doing?”
Through a mouthful of mashed potatoes, Will mumbled: “Probably letting the demos run wild at night as a natural pest control.”
