An absolutely impeccable romance. Adventure, passionate striving for goals, banter, and delicious amounts of knife-edge UST and Feelings. And - remarkable for this kind of slow burn! - there is a satisfying amount of resolution. I normally have to go off and read something with the “established relationship” tag after one of these, but this feels complete. I am emotionally satiated.
As for the writing craft, it has an elegant structure built around the pagan Wheel of the Year. The author also clearly did careful research and imagining to create just-real-enough places for the protagonists to go adventuring in. There are images of the real inspirations throughout that add to the verisimilitude. And there’s just enough worldbuilding to explain why things work without getting bogged down. I particularly appreciated that the author took advantage of the tight, third person, unreliable narrator Draco pov to handwave Hermione’s technobabble into a vaguely respectable shape without having to tie the reader in knots about it.
I don’t often read this pairing because there’s a regrettable tendency to bend them into unrecognizable dolls to make it work. Absolutely not the case here. Both Hermione and Draco have been extrapolated from their teen selves into believable, imperfect post-war adults with careers and lives. Hermione is obsessive, nerdishly enthusiastic, and idealistic. Draco is manipulative, vain, and ruthless whenever he can get away with it. But they’re both loyal and driven and clever, and find things to admire about each other, and eventually confide in each other in ways that make the relationship believable.
Henriette the house elf is a delightful OC. Tonks as the most badass, no-nonsense Head Auror is my new default headcanon for her.
I look forward to reading this again when my French is better. There isn’t so much that you lose anything if you don’t stop to translate - you can get it from context - but it’ll be a fun little extra for me.
