Like Tim cared when Dick separated from Roy, or Kori. Or the worst, Babs. When he tried his best to keep updated with everyone’s life, to be there when he needs them. Maybe they didn’t need Tim, and Tim trying too hard to be there just became a nuisance. How much can Tim demand from people who supposed to care for him? Like his parents, Bruce, Kon… how much can Tim ask? What is the boundary? Is it fair for Tim to want… to wish that they cared in a way in such they known at least his feeling?

    How much can he expect people to ‘care’?

    A purr rumbles in Dick’s chest. “They were fools to stand against us. I warned them from the beginning.”

    “Wow.” Tim shakes his head slowly. “Hearing that from you is - weird.”

    “You know of an alternate me?”

    “Yeah. He’s - well. I guess he used to be my mentor. I’m not really sure what we are anymore.”

    “He’s human?”

    “Mostly. He’s got the Sight and a wanderer’s Spirit but he’s still probably more human than the rest of us. He definitely acts like it, at least.” The smile that crosses his lips is small and sad. “He was my hero once, but he doesn’t approve of what I’m doing. Not anymore.”

    “What would he think of me?”

    “You?” Tim looks up at him, as if seeing him for the first time. There’s humor in his eyes, made morbid by the words that follow. “You would horrify him.”

    Tim showed up on his doorstep one night, bloody, half-dead. He’d been cagey about the details; Dick still doesn’t know exactly what happened. But he took his baby brother in and nursed him back to health. When hands lingered when he changed dressing, or when his lips brushed over feverish skin, Tim had let out these adorable, contented sighs. He held Dick’s hand on the couch. Slept in his bed, pressed against his side.

    Then he was better and he wanted to leave again. Just up and disappear, start over somewhere else. But how could Dick, the loving big brother he is, just let him go out to God knows where, alone, after he’d already gotten himself nearly killed once already?

    The collar had been a… souvenir of sorts from an off-world mission.
