The earth outside looked sick. Scarred, blemished with vine growths that pulsed faintly. “…what,” Billy whispered.
Harrington was standing a few feet away, bat clenched loosely in his hand, shoulders slumped as if something vital had been ripped out of him. His face was pale, eyes wide and unfocused, mouth slightly open.
He looked destroyed. Like someone who had just watched their worst memory crawl back out of the grave.
Billy took an involuntary step toward him. “Harrington?” The Alpha didn’t respond at first. His gaze was fixed on the windows, on the blue-lit wasteland beyond, his breathing shallow and uneven.
“No,” Harrington said finally, voice hoarse. “No, no, no…”
He dragged a hand down his face, staining it further with grime. His scent had shifted completely now—sharp panic undercut by something older, painful. “This isn’t—” He swallowed hard. “This can’t…”

Too far. Way too fucking far. He wanted to slam the brakes on the sentence before he even finished saying it, especially when Shane shot him a look of betrayed hurt, like he couldn’t quite believe he was hearing it, either. The defensive mask that came down over his face in the next second, like Ilya had just proven something he’d suspected all along, was even worse.
“Look, if you don’t…” Shane rubbed his eye with his fist, seeming much younger than his actual age all of a sudden. “Fuck. I think we’ve established by now that I’m not the most experienced guy on the planet, okay,” he said with a rough laugh. “I’m boring. Maybe we can even use the word repressed. But my understanding was that we’re, you know, exclusive. An actual couple. That the whole ‘separate hookups while wishing we were fucking each other’ season of our lives was over. It was kind of a shock to hear that you’re feeling a little trapped.”

Who’d cried at the thought of having to sleep with anybody else but him. Who made him cups of tea even when he was furious at him because he couldn’t bear for him to get sick.
