Thomas has always liked looking at Newt. There’s something effortlessly compelling about him—he doesn’t have to try, and that’s the most maddening part. Maybe Thomas would envy it, if he didn’t feel this strange pull in his chest every time they were close. Newt is familiar, endlessly so, but never boring. Thomas could look at him a hundred times and still find something new.
He knows exactly what it is he’s feeling—has known for a long time. And he also knows it’s not the kind of thing you're supposed to feel for your best friend. You’d think the feelings would wear off, considering how long he’s kept them buried. But they don’t. They just sit there—quiet, patient, impossible to ignore. He can’t unsee what he’s found in Newt. And yet, he could never chase it. This friendship means too much. Too much to risk. Too much to lose.

Newt turned back to his notebook, landing on his favourite page: a sketch of Tommy, done nearly a year ago, during the Christmas he’d spent at Newt’s home. The lines were simple, but somehow they captured the subtle curve of Thomas’ expression just right—thoughtful, wry, impossibly alive. Every sketch he’d ever made of Tommy, collected here over almost five years, was testament to a truth he had rarely allowed himself to admit; a compendium of his true feelings for the boy. And for the umpteenth time, Newt marvelled at the extent of his own denial, astonished that he had carried it for so long, even as it pulsed, stubbornly, in every corner of his chest.
